Hi i was diagnosed t1 early this year im 43 and not touched a alcoholic drink since new years eve last year.what im simply asking is how do i go about enjoying special occasions??im not really a drinker n dont smoke anyway ie if i wernt diabetic id proberbly on drink about 4 times a year just abit nervous about adreesing the issue as i have my daughters bday coming up and have developed a fear of having a drink n what to drink any advice will help thanks

Whilst having type 1 diabetes doesn't stop you having a alcoholic drink it's sensible to be aware of the risks involved and drink in moderation, have a look at the following as it contains some good advice:

The one thing about diabetes is alcohol can still be taken if sensibly. It has relatively little effect on blood sugar if a spirit or low-carb beer etc. When on insulin you need to be aware that the body can't produce emergency glycogen from the liver when trying to rid the body of alcohol so you need to keep clear of the hypo region and possibly have some carbs while drinking.
