Hi - I have just found this wibsite, and feel it is going to be my life line!! I am 30 yrs old (just!) and was diagnosed last Sept (08) during my 1st pregnancy. I was hoping that it was just gestational, but after my sons birth in Jan, my post preg GTT proved to my huge disappointment that I was infact type 2.
Anyway my hba1c readings have been 6.4, and most recently, and disappointingly 7.1.
My question, (and I have many... but I will save them for another time) is CARBS!!!!
Firstly I have come to the conlcusion that they are working against me, rather than for me. Can anyone recommend a good book that I can buy for a low carb diet? Im not saying I will never eat another potato agian, but I really need to get a grip and understanding of diabetes, as I hopefully have many years ahead, and I would like them to be as healty as possible!!
I always thought you should have lots of carbs in your meal, but this isnt really working for me, and I have read on Success Stories thread that this is not always the case for people.
I do enjoy my food and dont want to feel like I have to eat like a rabbit for the rest of my life, but I need recipes, ideas to stop this for seeming so daunting and depressing!
The only thing I can think of for breakfast that is low in carbs is eggs and bacon...you see I told you I needed help!!!!
Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated

Hi Smitha

I have been using "The new high protein diet cook book" by Dr Charles Clark & Maureen Clark which has "fast, delicious recepies for any high protein or low carb lifestyle" and I use it for most of my main meals although I do eat carbs.
Most people on this site would reccomend Dr Bernstiens Diabetes Solution which explains in detail Diabetes and the effect of carbs.
I am type 1 and obviously there are differences between our treatments so what works for me may not necessarily work for you, but in respect of controling my blood sugars, the less carbs I eat, the better the readings.

Good luck with it :)

Hi Smitha,

I'd certainly recommend Dr Richard Bernstein's Diabetes Solution which covers just about everything you'll ever need to know. It does include recipes too, but with the usual caveat of USA weights, measures and ingredients.
2 others worth a look are Rozanne Gold's 'low carb 1-2-3', and Rose Elliot's 'Vegetarian Low-Carb Diet.' Honestly, once you get the hang of it, you'll be able to knock up low carb versions of just about anything.

All the best,

fergus

Hi
thank you for your replies. I will be ordering on amazon tonight, so will let you know how I get on with any recipes!!
Also, I have been low carbing now for 4 days, and boy have I noticed a difference in my bs!!! Ive not had a reading over 6.5.
Quick question - Ive just had chicken salad with corn on the cob. My bs before were 4.4 and after 6.9. Is corn high in carbs?
Thanks again all

Yes. It is also quite high in fibre and you usually have it with butter so that slows down the glucose absorption a bit.
