I've had a fasting blood test return a blood glucose of 6.6. It wasn't a surprise as I'd started monitoring my levels with a Codefree monitor. I'm going for a repeat next month but in the meantime I wonder if anybody could answer two questions for me, please.

I've had experience of having my tea and testing 5.5 two hours after. The only thing I had after was a camomile tea, yet when I did a fasting test the next day it was 6.9 - what would cause it to increase that much overnight?

Once pre-diabetic/glucose impaired do you remain so and need to always address the issue?

Thanks.

Yes, you are likely to stay at risk but you can keep your blood glucose under control.

I assume that you are talking about the first early morning reading? Your liver is probably to blame, it kicks out some stored glucose to get you going in the morning.

If you were to search for dawn phenomenon in the top right search bar you will find more threads on the subject.

Welcome to the forums.

Hi Queen Vee.

We are at a very similar point in this journey. I have my blood test next week but have been monitoring with a codefree monitor for a month now since a spot check revealed higher blood glucose that was normal for me.

I had gestational diabetes 4 years ago when pregnant and have tested my bloods once every 2-3 months since. I had been feeling rubbish since September (exhausted) and had been gaining weight fast although eating "properly". So it wasn't a surprise when my home readings were high.

I instantly reverted to the low carb diet that was recommended to me by the specialist while pregnant and within 3 days I felt normal again and my post meals readings were back down to below 6. But like you my morning readings were higher than seemed logical (around 6.4).

So I read the bits recommended above and then added overnight fasting and 1 hrs moderate daily exercise into my routine alongside the low carb. (I use an aerobics step while watching an hours tv as a guilty pleasure that also hits the daily exercise needs)

I am now 3.5 weeks in and I am getting morning blood readings below 6 at least 4 times a week. I am finding that, for me, that the following external factors also affect the morning readings: hormonal cycle, amount of sleep, having a cold.

Good luck on your journey. I am so very grateful for this site and its forum for giving people the information to make informed choices about their own health and also to address the guilt surrounding diabetes.

Hi Paula,

Thanks for your reply! I was in this position a few years ago and had a high reading and then went low carb before the next reading and got 5.3 and was dismissed by the doctors. I should have carried on but it all fell by the wayside.

I had a baby 16 weeks ago and at my post-natal check the doc said I should have a full blood test, to include for pre-diabetes as well. I left the surgery and found this forum and bought a monitor. I wish I'd done both those things last time and not become complacent.

I need to get working on incorporating some exercise now the spring is coming.

Hope it goes well next week.
