Can someone please give me a definitive answer as to which Meal Replacement Shakes are best for the Newcastle Diet, I have searched the forums and can't find any really positive answers, I have been looking at Slim and Save but ALL their shakes contain sugar (as listed below). Not really sure if I should use them or try something else. I did ask Prof Taylor, but he was unwilling to recommend any specific ones. Don't care about cost.

I only take 2 x Gliclazide 80mg (one in morning, one at night) so I would rather try this now than wait (Hb1ac level is slowly climbing), I have asked my Dr and she is fine with it (she wants to monitor my progress), but is unable to prescribe Optifast.

This is the sugar level (g) as listed by Slim and Save:- (maybe I am misunderstanding what sugar is?)

I am afraid there IS no definitive answer.

My understanding is that Professor Taylor only used the Optifast Shakes because they were sponsored.

If you want low carb, then you can look at Almased or Atkins. Almased has a lot fewer chemically ingredients.
Beyond that, you can pick any of the various diet shakes, depending on whatever criteria you like.

Most of them will end up giving you a lowish carb intake across the day - simply because they are low calorie, but if you are sensitive to carb highs and lows (like I am) then I would go for the lower carb end of the range.

The other alternative is to go the Real Food Route, which is to take the allotted number of calories for each meal, but eat actual food. Much more hassle, but much better for you, I imagine.

(have to admit my bias, at this point: I prefer Fasting to diets like the ND, but that doesn't mean I don't totally support your decision to go the ND route ;) )

Hope that helps!

The sugar content doesn't really matter.
It's a low calorie diet, not a low carb diet.
(Although by definition, it has to be low carb simply because the calorie restriction makes it that way)

By the time you are a few days in, you should see your BG lowering and stabilising.

Good luck with the diet, and post back regularly to let us know how you are doing.

Thank you for replying, I am so confused about all this. So I guess that the slim and save would be OK to try and certainly just as good as anything else. I am being monitored by my GP who wants to see me once a week (more if necessary) and as part of that she wants me to take daily blood sugar level, weight, and belly size measurements(?). Hopefully it will work for me and I will most certainly keep the forum informed as I intend to keep a diary as well. I have tried the normal food diet but I just can't get on with it.
I weigh 17st 3lb and I should be about 12st so at the very least I hope there will be an improvement in general health.

My gut feeling is to replicate the nutrients in the Newcastle Diet as closely as possible.
Don't mess it about by trying to make it all things to all men.
It does seem from anecdotal evidence on here the original works, variants may not as well.

I was very lucky, I did a version using real food, very low calorie, before the Newcastle Diet really become well known, and it was very successful.
But it was zero fat, mostly salads, so probably majority carbs from the sugars in the onions, tomatoes etc.

Hi. I have been using slim and save since the middle of May and my bloods have been excellent. Around 4/5 every day. As mentioned, it's not really about the sugar content when on a very low calorie. Good luck.
