Hi all
I joined the forum just over a year ago but not got around to saying hello. I've been a T1 for 33 years, diagnosed Jan 83 at 25years old. Currently using Levemir and Novorapid and for the last 8 months I've been testing using the Libre system which has been a revelation though not without a few hiccups. I've had laser treatment for diabetic retinopathy and in 2010 had a severe bleed which was like watching toothpaste being squirted across my eye and as the protein and blood swirled around looking like a black & white version of the Galaxy my vision disappeared to zero in about ten minutes. With the guidance of my consultant it was left to my eye to repair itself (rather than have the clean out operation). 3.5 months later with vision returning and in the waiting room to see the consultant, it bled again and what sight I had disappeared. My consultant was upset I didn't knock on the door as he wanted to observe under the microscope- cheek! Still I got to wear a pirates eye patch for another few months. Since then all's been stable and I feel pretty lucky to have had no other complications.
I travel a fair bit for work but so far never had problems with airport security and insulin as some have described. The Libre patch doesn't set off the scanners either as I found by accident (forgotten I was wearing it) and the US Homeland security are not always the friendliest!
Anyway, you're all probably nodding off now so I'll stop. This is a great forum with lots of useful info shared. Long may it continue.

hey kev1
nice post with a long history:)
43 years T1 here
some retinopathy issues but not as serious as yours
I have been wearing the noctura sleep mask for the past 18 months and it has shown some improvement at the back of my eyes.

Welcome to the forum @kev1 :)

Good news that your diabetic retinopathy has been stable and long may it continue, not sure if you've seen this website when reading the forum but it's worth looking at as it has a wealth of information and advice on the condition:

Thank you noblehead. Yes I have seen and read a lot from this site and others, it's all good stuff. Apart from some lingering light cloudy stuff that's floats around a bit everything's been v stable for which I'm very thankful-even tho the docs called me an "interesting case" it's something I can do without!!

Yes must look into that, I've heard some good things about the mask. I hope your improvement continues. Thanks for the info!

Yes certainly something you could do without.

I suffered from diabetic retinopathy for a while but have been all clear now for the last 12 years, just don't give up hope and try and keep the faith.

Hello lads, I'm 41 years old, am 28 years T1, and new to the Forum. I got the word about retinopathy 4 weeks ago and had laser tx there and then. Was too shocked to ask many questions but I'm at a review in early May. Still a bit stunned, to be honest. It's good to know there are folk with a similar tale on here to chat to.

All the best,

M

Glad to help if I can. Fire away with any questions. The website Noblehead mentioned above has a lot of really good information. K.
