Hey all!

I was rushed into hospital with DKA and ended up in resuscitation earlier this year, it was all a mad rush but ended up self diagnosing myself with Type 1 Diabetes. The drs were quite happy to leave me for a few more days with a blood sugar reading of 29 and ketone reading of 5. I was physically shaking, feeling sick and losing weight at a rapid rate.

Anyways... fast forward.

The nurses told me my diabetes was probably brought on by me having Covid in October last year. They could see from my bloods that I had been diabetic for the 3 months they could see from my bloodwork.

Has anyone else been told this at all? I'm 37 and even though it does run in my family, strange patterns are happening within the family where it's always the oldest child in each generation ends up with Type 1 Diabetes.

So sad to hear your diagnosis, @rhodzy but tbh I'm in shock myself after reading what appears to be inaction for days after those blood results.

I can only say I believe type 1 is not frequently familial but other than that just suggest you keep pressing medics and peer groups like this for more information

I have been on a 39 year journey with my diabetes companion and can honestly say that since taking responsibility for my care and challenging my nurses and clinicians to understand more my whole life has become so much better.

Welcome to the forum.

Not sure how they could see from your blood you'd been diabetic for 3 months - the usual test provides, roughly, a 3-month average but it is biased towards the most recent month.
Adult onset diabetes which is not T2 is a bit rarer but not unknown. There are more than 2 types of diabetes recognised now.

I hope they've done all the referrals for eye screening and foot checks.
