Newly diagnosed + exercise = exhaustion?

Hi everyone,

Just a quick question. I've only been diagnosed as type 1 for a little over a month, I'm still in the honeymoon period and my blood sugars are usually between 4 and 8 these days, so I decided to get back to exercising again. The other day I went swimming for about 45 minutes and felt amazing until about half an hour later, when I began to feel absolutely exhausted - as if I'd run a marathon! The same thing has happened every time I've exercised since. Today I walked around 2 miles or so, and now I'm absolutely knackered again. This also happens when I do routine chores all in one day in the house.

Has anyone else experienced this at all? I'm just wondering if its a 'newly diagnosed' issue?

Thanks ;)
Laura

Newly diagnosed type 1 diabetic.

T2 not T1 but did you test your BG when you were knackered?
Are you on any meds?

Sounds possibly like low blood sugar.

Cheers

Yeah , happened to me still does occasionally. As you are newly diagnosed it might be your body adjusting to excercise with lower levels. Do test though when u feel like that. If it continues I would see your doc though.

Hy Laura

No it's nothing new feeling tired/exhausted after exercise of any type.

You should have been advised of what to do when you increase you activity levels above your normal routine.
I know it's a lot to take in at first but the increased activity one is important.
I use to play a lot of badmindton and for that I took a bottle of sugar drink [lucozade or similar] and sipped it after each game, I did play in league matches so they were quite competitive and therefore high in exercise.

Your normal insulin dose is for normal activity but for INCREASED ACTIVITY you need to up you energy source by eat/drinking some extra carbs. I find the sugar drink the easiest and quickest way to get quick carbs into my system when I'm exercising.

Swimming. it is important you take some extra before you start your swim as you don't want to go hypo while in the water.

As always good blood testing is the key so before exercise do your check and in the initial first times also while you are doing the exercise that way you will build up a memory map of how much you will need for different exercise regimes.

Don't forget you can also ask your diabetic nurse with any questions.

Regards

Thank you for all of your help, guys. I should have mentioned that during these periods of exhaustion I check my blood sugar levels and they're usually normal :\ I thought at first that it was just low blood sugar too but I think it may just be my body getting used to exercising with lower levels. I haven't actually been told yet much about exercise by my nurse - ill make sure I ask next time I see her :)

I got a.vague recollection of my nurse telling me excercise can be more tiring for diabetics as its obviously not natural insulin the body is using. this might not be the case for all but I definitely find it harder than before my diagnosis. Hopefully will improve over time and the more regular its done.
