Newly diagnosed from staffs moorlands

Hi forum
Wanted to join the forum for support and advice.
Was diagnosed in late nov 2010 after a blood sugar reading of 25.9 and 18 on fasting. Had experienced v severe symptoms and had no saliva and rashes and v blurred vision + chronic thirst (could drink 7 litres a day with no feelings of relief from the thirst) and chronic probs with bowels and peeing. Doc prescribed glucozide (?) It made no diff and after a week I was tested again and my sugars were 26.9m

I. Was referred to a diabetic nurse and was put on insulin twice a day (12mil) and x2 500 metaformin. My hbac (??) Was 12.9 and cholesterol was 6.5. Bp has settled and my bloods are stable now. I am still experiencing chronic fatigue and bouts of diarrhoea, off to see my prac nurse as the smallest things are tiring me out.

I am on citalopram for depression and do wonder if all the upheaval and shock at how ill I was is coming home to roost or maybe I am lazy! Mornings are horrendous and I fight with myself to get out of bed! Not helpful.

I am on a phased return to work as I was signed off for 4 weeks before xmas, I have seen occ health and they are supportive but have been off for a week feeling dreadful, I am hoping there is light at the end of the tunnel as at moment all feels too much

Thanks for reading

Hi,
Saw prac nurse wed am, she sent me for bloods then I had to see doc this am. I have been told to stop taking the metformin, so now on insulin only (novamix) more bloods next wk to look for other probs, doc was extremely supportive and now signed off work for 2 weeks. Had been experiencing diarrhoea so hoping that will settle, not sure if off metformin forever or just till tests come back....

Feel ok, but sometimes feel confused about advice, have seen a dietician and read up on sites re complex carbs and cutting out junk etc etc, am v strict but am starving a lot of the time and need to understand what snacks I can have that won't affect my weight. I think one of the reasons the metformin has been stopped is because I mentioned the fact that I want to lose more weight and metformin + insulin can cause weight gain!

I have seen a nhs dietician, but feel I need a regime that counts calories, satisfies me as well as being low sugar!! There must be millions of us out there that are diabetic and need/want to lose a few pounds....

Rant over,

Like many on here, I have been low(ish) carbing since diagnosis ( about 7 months ago ). Basically I cut out the 4 main culprits, pasta, rice, potatoes and bread. I cut portions a little but otherwise all I have done is upped my exercise from 0 to 3 times a week. I have lost 30kg in that time. I rarely feel hungry ( although I do sometimes get the munchies ) and am energetic and feel healthy. There are various versions of a low carb diet and we are encouraged on here to find our own level by testing after meals. Certainly works for me!

welcome to the insulin club, i went on basal bolus after advice from here and managed to lose over 6 stones by being more active and lo carb, my weight is now stable so i have a lowish carb diet now, being on insulin doesnt mean weight gain, if u need any help just ask :D

Metformin is not known for causing people to gain weight ? Usually it is the opposite or a neutral effect.

Insulin in EXCESS can cause it but as Totsy says doesn't mean that it will. You just need to get the dose adjustment right for the food you are eating.......a balance. It may be that once you start to get better control and weight starts to come off then you may be able to reduce the medications.
For now, you need to concentrate on getting the numbers right......a priority.

Carbs not so much calories are what is most important as they affect your Bg levels the most, although I wouldn't advocate loads of calories unless you trying to put weight ON !
