Newly Diagnosed - need advice on weight loss

Hello!

Newly diagnosed with Diabetes, unsure of what type at the moment. As though I have family history of type 2 and overweight, literally had symptoms for 3.5 weeks before being admitted with DKA and high blood sugars.

Now on insulin and metaformin to control these.

I am overweight and I know I need to lose weight as it will help with the diabetes (plus if I don't then my work will deem this as not helping myself and could possibly face disciplinary action). The problem at the moment is that as soon as I start to exercise or be active for a long time, I find I have false hypos (yesterday I had my first proper hypo - not a fun experience).

Is there anything I can do to stop these symptoms so that I can exercise?

The most important thing is to get a correct diagnosis. Treatment for T1 and T2 is different.

Cutting carbs will help but if you need advice from your team.

Hi. If you want to lose weight either as T1 or T2 you need to reduce your carb intake BUT when on insulin you need to take care as the insulin may need to be reduced to avoid hypos. Seek guidance from you nurse if you can otherwise you will need to do this reduction a small step at a time i.e. set a lower daily carb total and reduce the Bolus in line with that. If you haven't yet been taught carb-counting, insist that the nurse explains that as having fixed Bolus carbs is one way to have hypos if you just vary the carb intake. Carb-counting means adjusting your Bolus shots to suit the carbs in the meal
