Hi

I posted a couple of weeks ago, having been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes with a fasting blood sugar of 7+ (sorry, can't remember what they said it was) A previous test (they called me back for repeat) was 6+. Doctor told me I was definitely Type 2 but asked me to have a Hb1ac done before I saw the diabetes nurse (tomorrow).

Having been given lots of useful information on this site, and having been testing my bs (and low carbing) I had more or less convinced myself that I was definitely Type 2. While my bs has not been higher than 10.2 at any time, it tends to be a bit higher all the time than non diabetic figures.

Low carb diet has resulted in a weight loss of 9.5lbs lost in three weeks, so I'm pleased with that and determined to continue. (I reckon I need to lose about 5 stone in all)

But today, ringing for my Hb1ac result from last week, I was told it was 'normal, no action required'. When I pursued it, I was told the result was 40.

Now I'm totally confused. Does anyone have any ideas about what the DN is likely to say? What I should say to her??

thanks in advance

Claire

Hi Claire

The Hba1c figure is very good but not so much the BS numbers. What the DN might have to say is anyone's guess, but the "no action required" needs to be pursued until you receive an answer that you're satisfied with. Report back and good luck :)

Hi again!

Mike, thanks for your reply...

Today, the DN didn't know the answer either, (about what the figures meant) but she was really nice and helpful and has booked me an appointment to see the doctor on Monday to see what is to be done/whether they are going to call my situation Type 2 or prediabetes. She assures me that she will follow me up in three months and suggests I continue as I am with low carb and blood sugar testing! She also mentioned looking at diabetes forums, though she did suggest the other website rather than this one, but she wasn't absolutely sticking to the party line about carbs and no tests. (may be because I didn't ask her about having testing materials on prescription!) But all in all, had been dreading meeting her (saw her last year and she spent the whole time telling me off) so am very pleasantly surprised.

She didn't do any of the paperwork etc that would be needed if the dr does decide I'm definitely type 2, so if he does, I'll have to go back again to her.

Paradoxically, I'm not sure how I feel if it is decided I am *not* type 2 after all... my blood testing kind of shows me I'm right on the borderline most of the time. I'm definitely keeping on with the low carb etc *as if* whatever the dr says!!

Not sure if anyone else had has a similar experience??

Hi, my first blood test was a routine FBC as part of my annual cardiac review, it came back with raised BG of 68, so then my GP sent me for a HBA1c (and as a point both were none fasting, ) my hba1c came back at 67. I saw the DN who said because both readings were over 47 this is regarded as the definitive diagnosis for diabetes.

She went on to say, it's incurable but very controllable and once a diabetic always a diabetic...but the jury may well be out on that one :-)

The Hba1c is the only real way of knowing, but in your circumstances, caution is best, until they confirm one way or another.

Good luck...
