Newly diagnosed T2 worried how high my sugars are

Husband has had type 2 diabetes for 20 + years. Advice given in those days was to ‘fill up on carbs’. So he did as he was told and based his meals on potatoes, wholemeal bread, whole grain pasta and brown rice and his weight gradually increased and blood sugars readings were high. His diet was not unhealthy. He ate low fat. He ate lots of fruit and yogurts. Just before Christmas 2018, his diabetic nurse told him if he didn’t get his blood sugar readings down, she would have to prescribe insulin injections. I had read a lot about type 2 diabetics reducing or eradicating medications by eating a low carb diet (look at blood sugar diet and 800 calorie diet). As soon as Christmas was over, he started a low carb diet and has lost 2 stones in weight, reduced his HbA1c by 2 points and been able to drop Gliclazide. He now only takes Metformin. He felt 800 calories was i in achievable for him, so has eaten around 1400-1600 calories daily but has cut right back on all carbohydrates. After the first 3 days, he hasn’t felt hungry. He fills up on vegetables and salads which he eats with fish, chicken, the occasional small steak, cheese and eggs- omelettes and frittata. He has also cut back on fruit to 1-2 portions a day. Often he will have Greek yogurt with berries at breakfast or bacon and eggs with mushrooms and tomatoes. Also poached and scrambled eggs. I’ve researched low carb recipes and he enjoys tasty curries served with cauliflower rice and pasta dishes made with a small amount of pea or lentil pasta. I make a sweet potato brownie for him with almond flour that is delicious and coconut flour cookies. I would say his consumption of fat has gone up a bit, but apparently fat is filling and not the enemy we have all been told about for years. It’s been quite a change to how we used to eat and has taken a while to adjust. We just wish now we’d known about this diet years ago. We find that even on those rare occasions where he has eaten something like a baked potato, his blood sugar hasn’t spiked the way it used to. He is healthier now than he’s been in years and is trying to do more walking. I would encourage you to give it a try. Good luck!
