Hi again,

It is early days for you, so please don't be put off by things not comming together straight away.
You liver maybe dumping sugar into your blood stream at the time or waking too? Search "liver dump" or "Dawn phenominom." Or "DP"

What basal are you prescribed? (The long acting one.)

I’m taking Lantus 16 units on a morning and I will have a look now , just so annoying not been in range when your trying your best

Yeah I mean I’m 20 year old just looked at the liver dump and wouldn’t be surprised if it was that with hormones getting realised etc are u type 1 may I ask ?

Don't give yourself a hard time. It can happen to us all.

T1 since I was a kid. 44 years ago.. To be fair I don't do breakfast. I do, do lantus.
Liver dump for me can happen during the 2 hour period prepping for work? Even waking with a lovely 5mmol. "Flight or fight." It can scoot up a little. Even after walking a dog??
There is a possibility your Lantus has tailed off before waking, which also may not help..?

Of course we do react to insulins indeviduualy.

Yes true I think it’s also because I’m having a lot of hypo I eat carbs on a night when it happens which may not be doing me favours over the cause of the night I haven’t gone to to sleep with less then 13 sugar level yet so it makes sense that I’m waking up still high do you have any tips to keep in range

What time do you eat as a last meal. Tea/supper. What time of night do you go low? What are the numbers?
How are you treating these lows?
You could also be in the "honeymoon" period which could be throwing a spanner in the works with the lows??

I eat tea at 5pm then I’ll have some supper like apple and peanut butter , the lows hit 3 and I’ll have 4 jelly babies to bring me back up but then it brings me up too much I always end up going to bed with a level of 13 I normally go low after lunch at around 2

How often are you in contact with your diabetic team? When is the next appointment.

Sorry for all the questions, I'm not a big fan of "blagging" it without some facts.. :)

In contact everyday this week they have put my units up as I haven’t been told how to carb count because of Covid I have to wait a while to see a dietitian I think if I knew how to carb count then adding on my correction dosses I would be okay it’s just a nightmare that I can’t see the dietitian like I said

Hi. Carb counting is essential and easy. There is no reason by your surgery nurse can't help or the diabetes clinic. Think 1 unit of Bolus insulin to 10gm of carb as a start point. Test frequently as you make adjustments and make changes slowly. My surgery DN explained carb counting for me when I started insulin and it took just 15 minutes; mind you I am an engineer and a bit of a nerd! She gave me a leaflet showing food portion sizes and their carb content. The Carb and Cals downloadable App is very good for this.

Okay sounds good does it matter that I’m on humalog insulin or is it still the same work out method

I was diagnosed 5 months ago & still waiting on a dietician....

It took time but I learnt how to carb count through trial & error plus Bertie online is a good course.

Since your only a week in it’s probably best to take things slow. What do you eat/ do you exercise before these lows? I find I need less insulin to carbs over the course of the day so your lunch & tea doses might be too high compared to the carbs you eat, which is causing lows. What does your nurse say about them?

She said same that it’s trial and error , and I eat seeded bread for breakfast and lunch and then tea is different but normally like a chicken dinner or fish and salads I’m gonna learn carb counting as it’s obviously essential to all This , question do you take insulin before snacking on cereal toast etc

I try to avoid snacking because anything over 10g carbs requires insulin & if it’s within 4hrs of taking insulin there’s a hypo risk. Instead I have a stash of low carb snacks - cottage cheese, Pork scratchings, cucumber, crab sticks, cooked meats, salami, peanuts - that I can eat mostly worry free.

I use carbs & cals to track what I’m eating. Try tracking your carb intake for the next few days, it might be that your tea is less carb heavy than your breakfast.

For example 2 slices of bread is roughly 30g carbs (changes with different brands) whereas a salad could be as low as 5g depending on what you have on it. If you give the same dose for each meal you get very different results.

In the early days it’s really hard to know how to eat to your doses so keeping track of carbs & test results will help you puzzle things out. Eventually you will get more practiced & you can make more nuanced decisions.

Yeah cheers mate I’ve downloaded that app and used it with my tea it’s really useful , I’ll stick with the pistachios for snacks then just gonna have to keep track of the carbs I guess what a pain in **** type 1 is

It’s a massive pain but give it time, once you’ve got it cracked you can be more free with the carbs. I’m still learning everyday & making adjustments.
