Newly Diagnosed Type 1

Hello everyone reading this!
I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes on February 22nd with a blood sugar level of about 30. (I had symptoms for just under 2 months, yeast infections, and I actually ended up breathing out ketones by the time I was diagnosed and rushed into hospital for a week- I had a phobia of the doctors so I didn't tell anyone until I became too ill to do anything!)
It's now the 20th of May 2012.
I've been controlled quite quickly.
I'm mostly between 3-6 blood sugar levels.
Unfortunately I go low at least once a day and at the most 3 times.(I don't know what problems that can cause for me)
I'm 15 and a half years old.
A couple of weeks ago, my hair started shedding LOTS and LOTS, I used to have VERY VERY thick hair, now it's thinner and I'm not happy! :( My head also feels really sore, itchy and a bit crusty on some places.
I'm also lacking concentration because I'm feel so extremely tired (I actually fell asleep on the bus to school and almost in some of my lessons) Also EVERY TIME I wake up I feel low but I'm actually normal levels?!
I'm also forgetting things A LOT.
This doesn't help since I have my GCSE exams this week coming up!
I'm getting really stressed now, I cry sometimes because I can't take this any more!
I don't know why any of this was caused. I don't know! I'm so confused!
My mum has type 1, she's 51 and she got it when she was 13.
She also has an underactive thyroid which she developed after her 3rd baby. (I'm the youngest and her 4th baby)
My mum doesn't think I have an underactive thyroid though.
Hopefully going doctors tomorrow, but what do you lot think?
The insulin I'm on is: 20 units of Levemir when I wake up and then Novo Rapid before each meal.
Thanks! <3

Dear Angel,

What a brave young lady you are and we will all be cheering on for your exams! My 18 year old is just doing her A levels so I remember the exam stress. Not a medical expert but do know a little bit about life. Always say when it is a tough day 'you can't have the rainbows without the rain' and with your spirit there will be rainbows out there for you.

Hi AngelBoltz and welcome to the forum.

I was really ill for 2 months before they finally rushed me to hospital feeling half dead. Spent about 4 days on a drip and was in for just over 2 weeks. I was 14 at the time.

It would be worth trying to keep you levels up a little - say between 4-7 - as being near hypo a lot of the time can be very exhausting. Ask your doctor about it tomorrow, as it might be worth adjusting your Levemir.

I'm not sure why your hair is thinning  Mine is a bit, but I'm 54 so that's to be expected ;)

Hope you fell better soon.

Robert
