I was diagonised 5 weeks ago as type 2 Diabetic and have been prescribed Metformin 500 mg I had to gradually increase them to four a day over a period of time. Just over a week ago I got up to the 4 a day but Ive been experiencing pains in my stomach which is really sore to touch and the pain has now moved to my lungs which hurt when I take a deep breath, I was also put on Simvastin 40 mg one at night for my cholestral, spoke to the doc yesterday and explained my symptoms he said to stop the Simvastin as this can cause the problem. Im not due to go for my first visit to the Diabetic Clinic until next week. I was just wondering if anyone else has this kind of experience??

Hi murphy and a warm welcome to the forum.
Cannot help with your Metformin query but I too had a bad experience with statins similar to your description. I also had crippling pains in my limbs and felt permanently tired.

Hopefully someone else will post about the Metformin. There is a thread about this on the Medication and Drugs Board.

hi murphy
I too had real stomach problems on metformin -pains and running to the loo- I was advised to ask for SLOW RELEASE metformin. These are more expensive than the basic form and thus patients are somewhat tested to see if they can tolerate the cheap stuff. I was told they would settle down but on the next visit to the nurse I was given the slow release, end of probs.
I am no expert but this was my experience.

Hiyas

Maybe a new doctor is in order. If you have type 2 and also high cholesterol you need a lifestyle change - diet and exercise. If your doctor didn't tell you this, I'd look for a new doctor rather than just a drug pusher. Yes, all these drugs have bad side effects. You might want to do a little reading about them. A good one on Statin (cholesterol) drugs is Lipitor Thief of Memory... A good one on type 2 diabetes is Eat Fat Lose Fat by Ray Strand. Read these two books and you'll know more about your health problems than all the doctors in the UK combined.

Dear all,

I am also new to this forum and was diagnosed a few weeks ago. I am trying diet and exercise at the moment. Has anyone seen this article below about natural "cure"?? There so much 'stuff' about this desease, it's a job to know what to believe. I found this article interesting to read.

Type 2 is NOT curable at present.

A lot of what the article says is basic diabetic care but then he goes onto supplements and the alarm bells immediately ring, another 'snakeoil' article.
