Newly Diagnosed Type 2

Try reducing the amount of carbohydrates, eat enough fat to not get hungry, avoid below ground vegetables , eat plenty of leafy vegetables , if you add sugar to hot drinks: stop (use a sweetener if you have to). Avoid prepared meals and make your own (so you know there’s no added carbohydrates), aim to only buy (and eat) ingredients that are less than 5g carbs per 100g. if you’re a chocoholic, switch to higher cocoa content. Eat berries in moderation but avoid other fruits especially tropical ones like bananas.

Invest in a blood sugar finger pricker: unfortunately your doctor and diabetic nurse may try to dissuade you because they feel it makes people anxious. However, most type 2 here have found it invaluable as an aid to know which meals are okay for them and which aren’t. Simply test before eating, and then test 2 hours later. You’re looking for a rise of no more than 2 mmol/L between the 2 readings. If it’s higher then you probably need to adjust that meal. Stress, cold weather, hot weather, infections all affect your blood sugar levels so look for trends in the the readings rather than worrying over one single reading.

It’s a marathon not a sprint so be ready for gradual long term change - it’s taken years to become type 2, it’s to be expected that it will take at least months to improve.

Thank you for your advice very much appreciated. I've been eating bananas every morning with porridge need to try different types of breakfast. Good advice about the testing my blood sugars I've been told by diabetic nurse to test four times daily so will test like you advised to keep me on right track.
