The course I went on ( gp referred for me) is a bit like a talk and a work shop, covers education abt diabetic lillness, you have HCP doing the course, if you have a good group of people and questions you want to ask it can be a good start.....also given a hospital no. To ring if you want to ask further questions, it is basic, but to me it was so useful in getting started because I was in shock and very unwell.....(really no swinging though) ;)

hi Kat

thats the thing i didnt feel well the other day and i didnt know what to do. i think i may have had a hypo felt dizzy for a very long time till i had some fruit juice. i didnt know what to do. the books say contact your diabetic team, i dont have one lol or if i do i do not know who they are lol. its really bad they way they said you have it. your fat get over it lol. jeez and this is what my massive national insurance bills is for. you and the other guys on here have taught me more in one day than they every will. cant thank you all enough  xx

Hi Steve,
If you let your numbers run low it is possible to have a hypo attack, a bit of orange juice followed by a carb snack works for me, a granary bread sandwich or maybe a banana, different things for different people....I also have digestive biscuits ready if I need the odd one, I try to have 3 meals a day, sometimes my body knows it needs a snack , not always good to run with low numbers, it's about keeping well, try getting on the course, and see a dietitein I am lucky having a good one. If this helps, one year ago, I had just put weight on, did not know why, then I was rushed to see gp after blood levels were 19 I was put on medication. No sugar I do use sweeteners now to bake though, I am still very much new to everything, I just tried to see what works now one year on have lost the 3 stones I had out on, I am back to nearly to my right weight, well that means one stone to go...
I hope to maintain my weight, fat is an awful word to use, and I don't believe it's about lifestyle, but the physical cause can be helped by diet and exercise.....
I have the odd sconce homemade, sugar replacement, I use total sweet, or xylitol for baking.....some people have a few squares of 70% chocolate! I do that! and I am a thortons chocolate eater! now and again.....the diabetic sort, again my choice...
I am going to practice more baking in the new year, but it is one step at a time......seek further help from gp, feeling unwell is not nice, I have a chat about every 10 weeks, I say I need ongoing support, ask which is the best dr to see at your practice, who has knowledge of this illness, gps are there to work with us...keep us posted and ask and share as much as you want, the more often the better.....you can of course feel very unwell if your sugars go high......do you have a hba1c test to book...you will need one....best wishes Kat

wow you have done so well to get you numbers down and loose the weight. well done you. im on the hard diet at the mo to get back to my usual weight. im 18 stone but was 13 stone. mad really all beacuse i gave up the fags lol. but im getting the weight off. need to get a job too thats not 10 hours a day sitting in front of a pc grrrrrr. at the moment im just not having any goodies at all.

i just tested my blood sugar before dinner it was 4.4 and i had home made oven chips a gammon steak and two fried eggs with carrots and my blood sugar 2 hours later was 6.2 which i think is good. im going to see a different GP after christmas. one that listens to me i hope

steve

Steve, many people who smoke, are not diabetic!!!!!
Many who work with a PC are not, I was very active good veggie diet, So I thought, but I felt ill.....I was ill.....don't blame yourself it's easy to do that, but your body just is not working right a faulty gene somewhere maybe....
Great idea to find a different dr......make them hear you and your health needs.....you can do it,......
You also have a sense of humour that really helps ;)
Keep us posted great to support each other :) Kat x

Cheers.....

You bake that is great, I loved baking, now I still bake, just change the ingredients, try the half and half sugar...or total sweet like xylitol you can still bake, whitbyjet puts great recepies on here, have a look, I have not tried the almond flour or coconut flour yet though, but I might at some point....I have my apple crumble ready made for Christmas Day, and it tastes sweet......:) I freeze them....you really can bake, I am a low fat person depends what you want to do, I still make ginger cake
Sconces, maderia cake etc, all in moderation, but I do bake, really don't stop......Kat x ps think Andy bakes as well.....tc x

one sparkling water coming up with a cherry :)

I only really bake for fun like to see what i can create. i have to say im not finding the food thing to bad at the moment as on a diet so i expect my food to be boring as hell lol. christmas day tho i am cooking for my family so someone will have to stop me from inhaling the turkey lol, to be fair i find that im an addictive personality so when i go for it i really go for it. but on the flip side i also find when im done with something im done with it. like sweets etc, i find when i dont have them for more than a week i go off the idea and dont feel the need for them so much. like giving up the fags. now i did it i never go back.

i tested my bloods this morning on a fasting over night and they was 4.4 mmol i have no idea what that means but i think its ok? does that mean i can celerbrate with a family size dairy milk lol. in my dreams.

Andy hit me with your best bake :)

You cold celebrate with my suprise pudding .It is simply a square of dark choc in a small dish covered with heated berries and then topped with a blob of cream .The fruit melts the choc so that as you eat you get the bitter choc and the tart berry and the soft cream Yum you could add sweetener to the berries if you are a sweet tooth or perhaps if you make it for children

chocolate chocolate chocolate yes yes yes yes yes gimme gimme gimme i lurrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrve chocolate. guess what i love chocolate lol. sounds nice carty. how do you restrain yourself if it is in the house tho. i am alas weak :( x

If you use the very high cocoa content choc it is so rich that it is easier to limit yourself and anyway it is a goof source of magnesium  Try almonds dipped in melted dark choc -more magnesium and very filling
CAROL

nuts dipped in dark chocolate. carty you are a genius :)

christmas day tho i am cooking for my family so someone will have to stop me from inhaling the turkey lol,

Just to cheer you up, you can pretty much inhale all the turkey you like on Christmas day. It's mainly protein and won't hit your blood sugar much at all.

As much turkey and vegetables as you like! Smoked salmon, sausages wrapped in bacon, cheese, fruit - it's all fine for you on a low carb diet. You can also make a lovely stuffing with lean sausagemeat, chestnuts, apricots and herbs.

Just go easy on the potatoes, bread and christmas pudding. I typically just have a small taste of these kinds of things, so I still get the full flavour experience and don't feel I am missing out on anything.

Oh - and feel free with the red wine too - it won't move the needle on your blood sugar much if any. And if you are a curry lover, just avoid the rice as much as possible. Have a lentil daal instead, or vegetable side dish and swap the naan bread for a wholemeal chapatti. If you want to be really healthy go for tandoori meats instead of heavily sauced dishes. Drop the sugary mango chutney and use lime pickle instead - or if you are a chilli head I recommend "Mr Naga" hot chilli pickle.

Once you get the hang of this, you'll find that it's amazing what you can eat and drink without spiking your blood sugar and you are definitely going the right way be monitoring your levels to see what does and doesn't effect you.

hi

yes im getting the idea now about not eating the carbs. the things i guess i used to live on. in this case i will get the biggest turkey in all the land lol. ive only monitored my blood sugars for the last 2 days so far with a accu check avia nano. these are the results ive had the last 2 days. funnily enough i had to go for a curry last night for a work thing. results below. its the last 2 days. how does it look?

Lunch chicken sandwich home made with stuffing and 2 slices of brown bread. before meal 5.3 mmol/L 2 hours after 7.1mmol/L

Dinner Gammon Steak 2 Fried Eggs Home Made Oven Chips Carrots and Ketchup before meal 4.4mmol/L 2 hours later 6.2mmol/L

Breakfast 1 Slice of Five seeded Wholemeal Bread with laughing cow light cheese triangle before meal 5.7mmol/L 2 hours later 4.4mmol/L

Lunch 2 x slices of Wholemeal bread with thin spread of clover and 1 x small tin beans before meal 4.4mmol/L 2 hours later 7.5mmol/L

dinner 1 x popadom and onion salad and mango chutney mixed kebab, chicken bhuna and half a peshwari naan before meal 4.4mmol/L 2 hours later 6.8mmol/L

how does that look. im trying to figure it our but cant really tell
