Hi
Just diagnosed about 2 weeks ago. Readings pretty much borderline but have been asked to follow a fat free diet as my cholesterol level is up and obviously avoid sugars. put on Statins . I Wondered if anyone else has been put onto Metformin straight away like me? 1 for first week 2 the second upto 3 the third. It seems odd to me that I wasn't just on diet only. Was I have a little monitor which I use twice a day at present after breakfast and evening meal. Readings not too bad 8's and 9's 10 and 6's :? so any possible explanation would be appreciated. Glad I found this forum everyone seems so friendly with loads of helpful advice - Cheer!

Welcome to the forum ,Julie.Did your doctor tell you to test after those meals or are you just doing it yourself? The best way is to test before eating then two hours after to find out just how that particular meal has affected your blood sugar levels.Your readings are high but then it depends on what you ate and when you tested.
Did you ask about being on diet only to start with?

Please have a good read round the forum and ask us plenty of questions.

Hi Julie,
Welcome to the forum,
My name is sandy!
The doctor's wanted to start me on pills but i asked if they could give me a couple of weeks to try and sort it by diet only!
I know that alot of people are put onto the pills or insulin straight away! It all depends on what your blood sugars are like at the time of taking fasting and Glucose intolernce test etc!

Hi Julie.
Welcome.

Fat free or reduced fat is a good idea in my opinion for someone who has Cholesterol issues. That is what I do.

What should happen when first diagnosed is that you should be given around 3 months Diet only to see if you can gain control of your Diabetes that way.
Unfortunately what usually happens is you get put straight on to Metformin as you found. The reason it is staged is to give you time to adjust to the medication. Don't expect things to change overnight.
As Sue says your Bg readings are not exactly good but it does depend on when they were taken and your food intake etc. The target figures for a T2 to try and achieve is as follows:
Fasting (waking)................between 4 - 7 mmol/l.
2 hrs after meals................no more than 8.5 mmol/l.

I presume you have been given a 'Healthy' diet to follow. This may be OK for you but testing as Sue says before food and 1 and 2 hrs later will show what elevates your Bg levels.

Hope this helps.

Ken.
