Newly diagnosed with no energy

My 13 year old daughter was diagnosed Type 1 a month ago. Frequently she complains of weakness/ exhaustion/lack of energy even though regular testing shows normal BG levels. Does anyone know why, is this normal or should I be worried?

I was diagnosed a couple of years ago but I seem to remember it took me a while to get my energy levels back. There was a big change in the first week or so after I was diagnosed, I felt so much better than I had for quite a while. However as things began to settle down I was back to being pretty tired for a while longer, I was also VERY hungry for a few weeks. It seemed reasonable to me that after having lost quite a bit of weight before diagnosis that my body was going to take a while to adjust.

That said if it doesn't seem to be improving or you are particularly worried it would be worth mentioning it to your daughters Doctor or DSN as it could be a sign that there is more going on.

Thanks for your reply. Although we were lucky to get an early diagnosis, it means that she felt absolutely fit and well before starting the insulin!

There is a possibility that your daughter has a problem with the type of insulin prescribe. Some people struggle using analogues so worth looking into this if on Lantus as that seems to be the main culprit.
Has your daughters thyroid been tested?

Yes, thyroid was normal and she is on Lantus. I will contact her doctor. Unfortunately we are living in Hungary so there is a language problem for us here. It is great to be able to chat to people in English!
