When should a newly diagnosed DM2 patient see an endocrinologist?

I was diagnosed on 8th June. I am having real problems with getting my BS under control. I was wondering whether I should have been offered an appointment with the endo people at my local hospital. I dont know whether its worth asking for one.
 
I was diagnosed in 2003 and I've never seen a specialist.
I think most T2 people never do.
The best policy seems to be to learn as much as you can for yourself. this forum is a good place to start. The "stickies" are useful.

If you are not happy with the GP's diagnosis ask for a referral to the Endocrinologist. Can I ask are you on any other medication?
 
Some Primary Care nurses are experienced at helping type twos get control. Perhaps a referral to the practice based diabetes clinic will help?

The major hurldle in the NHS is that the dietary advice which instructs you to base meals around starches and to avoid fats and eat small amounts of protein is wrong. Because your pancreas can't handle sugars or starches you need to base meals on lean protein, low glycaemic vegetables, moderate amounts low glycaemic fruit, and healthy fats.
