Hi all,

Newly diagnosed a prediabetic this week. A bit shocked as thought I had healthy diet (no junk food, no ready meals), eat plenty fruit and vegetables. Not sure what I can do to reverse situation but looking forward to finding out from here and reading other experiences.

Any advice gladly accepted.

Welcome....
Read through threads as there is loads of advice.

My advice would be - and lovely people will be along with suitable links soon...

Eat low carb. The healthy diet lots of us ate pre diabetes or pre pre-diabetes is the one that helped get us here. All those healthy carbs we're told is ok. As a t2 diabetic we cant process those carbs in whatever form, shape or colour and instead the glucose produced fills up fat cells and the sloshes round your blood stream giving high blood sugar levels.

Get a blood glucose meter. Check before eating and 2 hours after and monitor the effect it has on your blood sugar.

For me I see it as an 'allergy' to carbs so I can cope with eating loads less. Nut allergy people wouldn't eat nuts! I'm not always perfect, chocolate and chips have passed my lips on several occasions. However, low carb has taken me from waaaaay into diabetic numbers to 'normal' healthy range in 7 months. So going from prediabetes to healthy numbers will be noproblem!

And I should add, all my help and advice came from checking in here daily, reading and asking questions of our own 'experts' (who also make it clear they are not experts!!)

Hello @Canchris , and welcome,

T2 is a genetic condition, though it can be brought on by use of statins or steroids (for other unrelated conditions). You're basically unable to process carbs. And practically all carbs turn to glucose once ingested. So you'll want to step away from the fruit. (Berries in moderation, tomatoes, avocado's and starfruit are fine, but the rest.... Nope.). It'll mean a complete overhaul of your current diet, probably... But your blood sugars and with that, your entire body, will thank you.
https://josekalsbeek.blogspot.com/2019/11/the-nutritional-thingy.html <-- have a read here, it's everything I wish someone'd told me when I was first diagnosed. Let's see whether we can keep you from developing T2 all together. Oh, and if you're interested, try reading Dr. Jason Fung's the Diabetes Code or watch his youtube video's, check this forum's webpage (diabetes.co.uk , not .org!) and dietdoctor.com . There's a whole world of foods to get acquainted with.

Good luck!
Jo

Hi. I don't know what you believe a healthy diet is but you may be on the wrong path Veg and non-tropical fruit is fine. So is protein and fat in sensible quantities but you must keep the carbs down.
