Hi All
I was diagnosed Type 1 a month ago after to going to the GP as I felt unwell. It was a week before my 50th birthday. I expected the blood test results to show hormonal changes but less than 24 hours after the blood test was done my GP contacted me and I was immediately admitted to hospital. Very very high Blood Sugar, traces of Ketones (didn't even know what that meant), high iron, cholesterol and infection markers. HBa1C was 134! Also dehydrated. After a few nights I was sent away to deal with it all with limited information (the internet was a godsend). Was then admitted again two weeks later after a routine follow up/check up and stayed a further three nights. All very very overwhelming and the information provided has not been great. Anyway I am now trying the best I can. I thought this may be a good place to be in touch with people in a similar situation , I sometimes feel all of my conversations with family, friends and work colleagues are around how I am feeling. Nice to meet you all. Karen

Hi Karen - I was also diagnosed about a month ago too and very similarly admitted due to ketones etc. Going through chemo at the moment too so steroid doses are making it extra tricky.m but I’ve found this group really helpful so far. Have you managed to get a libre monitor on your arm to help monitor? I’ve found that super useful although a little addictive with the constant tracking.

Hoping you settle in to a rhythm soon
X

Hi Karen
I was 12 when diagnosed T1 and no thanks to the GP, I survived dam near lost. The great news is that for 47 years t1 I've seen most things good and bad. Hormones do effect bloods but all is easily controlled.
You should take things slowly and request a Libre 2 sensor from your diabetes specialist.
Please see the following taken from Google:
What is DAFNE? DAFNE stands for Dose Adjustment For Normal Eating. It aims to help adults with type 1 diabetes lead as normal a life as possible, whilst also maintaining blood glucose levels within healthy targets, to reduce the risk of long-term diabetes complications.

DAFNE: Home

My 39mmol is testament to correcting low bloods with care, over compensation creates a massive high so be careful.

A great deal to learn I grant you, but it does get easier as you learn how you body copes with various foods. Don't want to overload you, but think of insulin as a balancing tool for what you eat rather than limiting what you eat. Kind regards Martin

DAFNE is an excellent idea as it makes you aware of how food types effect you

Thank you, I appreciate the advice. At the moment I am massively limiting what I eat which is very repetitive and very restricted. I will certainly take this on board.

Hi @karen205 I was diagnosed when I was 51 with an HbA1c of 129.4, (you win!!), after a back ache which I though was menopause related. It's such a shock eh! I wasn't sent to hospital, just given a massive list of prescriptions, including insulin and a leaflet about driving from the diabetes nurse at my surgery - it was great:banghead:. This forum is the best place.

It's completely overwhelming, but it does get better.

I am 18 months in to LADA and got my HbA1c back into non-diabetic range within 3 months by low carb, metformin and exercise (speed walking for c.30mins/day) - I have my routine established and it works 95% of the time for now without much overthinking. I know I will decline to insulin at some point, but no-one knows when that will be. You will get into a routine with whatever treatment is needed by you, and it will become your new normal even tough that might still be hard to believe.

I definitely think it is harder to be diagnosed T1 at our age, you have lived so long without diabetes, and don't start off with all that parental support/innocence of those diagnosed in childhood, but there are plenty of us about who can completely empathise.

Hopefully you will get all the info you need from your medical team and/or this site, I'd still be waiting to be seen for my first appointment if I hadn't been proactive - I hope your hospitalisation has bumped you up the list - you have to grab those positives where you can :)
