Welcome to the forum.

Loads of reading matter for you to trawl through. Luckily we have lots of experts who will answer any questions.

Good luck :D

Hi Rivka, and welcome to the forum.First thing, you are not alone. We all felt like that to start with. You have found a good place to get info on your diabetes.Have a good read round the forum and you will find a lot of advice.Did they give you a test meter? Many doctors/nurses are unwilling to give these out with a vague 'oh you don't need to test'.We say here, yes you do need to test so that you can find out which foods affect your blood sugar (BS) levels. You can buy the meters, they are fairly cheap,it's the test strips that are expensive!
Food...diabetes is an inability to metabolise glucose properly so any foods with sugars are best restricted. There are two main types of sugars, simple sugars such as sugar, these are quickly absorbed and send your blood sugar up quickly. The other main type are complex sugars/starches.These are absorbed more slowly but convert 100% into glucose so these should be restricted as well. The starchy carbs are found in bread, pasta, rice, potatoes and any flour based products. The standard NHS diabetic diet says eat these with every meal.Experienced diabetics have found that it is best to restrict these starchy carbs to keep their BS levels down.
When you look at food labels the label will say 'carbs of which x amount is sugar.Look at the whole carb content as it is the whole carb content that will affect your blood sugar.
It is very confusing to start with.Begin by cutting out all the obvious sugar in your diet.Restrict ,potatoes, rice and pasta etc to smaller portions than you now eat.You can eat plenty veg, meat, cheese etc.Fruit contains sugars as well, some can eat fruit some can't ,we are all different so it is very much trial and error till you find what works for you!!
I think that is enough to start with, please read round the forum and ask us questions,we've all been there and do understand just exactly how you are feeling.

thanks for ur help ,i am reading what i can cutting out sugar ,and will restrict pasta etc,

hya rivka,
if you have a hypo (go low) usual practice would be some quick acting glucose, lucozade tablets, gluco tabs etc are all around 4g carbs each so take 3 tabs and check again in 15 mins,if still hypo take more,if not and youre due a meal soon just carry on as normal,if its ages off a meal then have a sandwich or toast etc to keep you going
anymore questions just ask :D

Hi rivka,
Another alternative if you don't have glucose tablets to hand is to have a small glass of "breakfast" fruit juice. This is very high in natural sugar and will bring your blood sugars back up very quickly. This is why you should only have a small glass - and ideally never drink it other than to treat a hypo!

hya,
just remembered your type 2,
are u on any medications?
:D

Hi there,
I will be watching this as I am getting low readings on diet control only, 4.00 when I got home from work today, and I am sooo confused too. I was diagnosed in Feb, and had a fasting bs of 15 then, but my bs levels have been going down ever since despite my habit of cheating and eating things I know I shouldn't. Told the doc and he has booked me in for tests next week. Should I just eat more?

hya annie,
welcome... if you are on diet alone i wouldnt worry too much, i would just keep a close eye on your numbers, non -diabetics are usually around 4/6 mmol, those numbers are what us diabetics aim for, have u lost any weight since diagnosis? this may have helped your insulin resistance
let us know how u get on with the doctor :)

Gone from 9st 12 to 8st 7 and feeling great :D . Was starting to panic as 4 seemed low. I work with a type 2 on insulin and if she hits 4 she's scoffing glucose tabs and bananas. I just ate a spam butty and some biccuits and some raisins and now I'm on 8.3. Is it the jumping about that is a problem or how high it swings up to? Doc I got is telling me v. little and the practice nurse nearly had a wobbly when I mentioned eating a buiscuit! No wonder I'm confused. I know how lipz57 feels.

i know how u feel annie, the majority of us doesnt tend to get told much, hypos are mainly a worry when u are on insulin or other glucose lowering medications so try not to worry ,i would kill to be 4 all day lol(well wouldnt actually kill) basically as a diabetic we are trying to be between 4/8mmol before meals and under 10 after meals, the lower the better,
testing is the way to find out what foods affect you as we are all different, test an hr after a meal, then two hrs to see what will work for you, cutting carbs will help stabilise your blood sugars further, anymore questions just ask :D

Hi Rivka
Have you been prescribed anything?
It may seem odd, but some of the low carb "slimming "diets are an ideal way of eating for a T2 diabetic. that is Atkins, South beach and protein power. Following any of those will help keep blood glucose on target and if you get yourself a BG meter, you can quickly learn to adjust what you eat to keep in the right place.
Your name!Rivka, are you Jewish and do you have dietary restritions that you need to follow? If so there shouldn't be a problem. There are plenty of alternatives.
You have a lot to learn, so take it slowly.
Removing sugars from your eating is a straightforward first move and then reducing starches right down.forget what you've been hearing about fats for years. they're fine for you and prevent you getting hungry.
And healthy wholegrains aren't. They're actually not good for anyone and least of all if you have diabetes.
You'll eventually find out what's right for you as an individual.

PS Rivka, you don't need to worry about hypos if you have not been prescribed medicines that cause them. that is Insulin, Gliclazide or Pioglitazone or a few others.
Metformin doesn't
