New global survey reveals more than one in three patients fail to take insulin as prescribed

Makes you wonder dunnit?!

"More than one in three diabetes patients skip doses or fail to take their insulin as prescribed, stating that they have done so on average three times in the last month, and 77% of physicians estimate that in reality this number could be as high as six doses*, according to the Global Attitudes of Patients and Physicians in Insulin Therapy (GAPPTM) survey, released today by Novo Nordisk."

You get caught up with the moment, 'something I should have done eh'! An hour or so later, ah insulin. Never missed a dose but have come close. It is surprising that it is something that you do as you eat, yet because of distractions does not happen when it should. I have been on insulin for 15 years. It happens on average every couple of months.

Really can't remember when I last forgot to take my insulin and would have to go back 10 years or more. One in three does seem quite a high figure, and its astonishing that physicians believe the figure for missed doses could be nearer six a month!

I seldom 'forget' to take my metformin... have one with every meal most days...

IMHO the folks that are regular posters here are not your average and take their illness very seriously. Perhaps at least some of the respondents in such surveys are of a different kind.

Also, I get the impression that HCPs kind of assume we won't 'behave'. Dunno where this comes from but likely it is just experience not some conspiracy. 8)

Good theory Cowboy and I certainly agree with the first part, but I do wonder what age group the canvassers who conducted the survey targeted? There was a elderly lady on the DAFNE course that I did who often forgot to take her insulin, we as a group suggested ideas to help remind her to take the insulin before her food, no idea if she put them to use but we did try!

Well I have some tablets that have the days printed on the bubble packs, so I can check if I have taken them or not. I have only once forgotton my morning set, including my metformin. But I have often forgotton my eveing set without realising and the next day see yesterdays still there, I findon average I forget once a week to take the eveing stuff.

My morning routine is fixed so taking my medication is part of it, but evenings vary so much that I can easily get distracted.

It is particualrly hard when there is different medication to be taken at different times and quantities, I can understand why somebody might miss a session ehre and there.

My mum was insulin dependent and very reliable and well controlled, but she would if she was somewhere different, quite often forget her insulin unitl after a meal or even bedtime when she did a routine test and found herself too high.
