NHS Advice on diet

Michael Mosley

Not a bad idea. He did the documentary because he wanted to live longer but healthy. He also did a documentary about HIT (high intensity training) where he showed if you did (I think it was) three minutes of pure hell on a bike 3-4 times a week, you gained more than spending hours at the gym, or pounding the streets. He seems to be very interested in health issues, but my one concern... as a medically trained man, will he listen to us, going completely against the NHS line? I would like to think he would.

Yes, I think that should be our opening gambit:

Michael, we have a great deal of respect for your knowledge in this area, and wonder whether you would be prepared to re-evaluate the NHS approach to diabetes in your own, dispassionate way.

About three years ago i was diagnosed as being borderline then a while later they called it pre diabetic when i asked what this meant the doctor said that i would most probably go on to develop full blown diabetes not once did he say "but if you change your diet and eat better you may aviod this" so i just carried on i didnt think i had any option its only when i was diagnosed last week and i came on this site that i realised maybe if i was given a bit more information i might not be where i am today. when i spoke to the practice nurse i was told that i could not have a appointment to see dietician for 4 weeks ,i asked "what shall i do in the meantime " she said oh just carry on as normal ! if it wasnt for this site i would not have a clue what to do

Hi Gally -

that is just disgraceful. Whenever the evidence suggests that the NHS has little interest in preventative medicine, I find myself loath to accept this, but sometimes the evidence leaves us with no plausible alternative.

Don't just accept your diabetes at this stage, though. Do what you can to reduce your BG levels, and see where that takes you. Good luck!

BTW when did you start on the meds?

think im doing ok have started to follow low carb and portion control and have already lost 6lbs still a little bit overwhelmed by it all there is such a lot to take in, struggling to eat enough calories i think but starting to understand it all now but not on meds ...yet

Grrrr ... same here. I was diagnosed as borderline about 30 years ago, I didn't even realise I was being given a 'diagnosis' as such, it was more of an 'aside' while I was seeing my GP about a neck problem I think. He didn't offer any information at all and it was well before internet and to be honest it went in one ear and out the other as he was examining my neck which I thought I must have broken because it was so painful.

As for your practice nurse ... well sadly she's not unusual ... mine's very similar 'Here's the tablets see you in 3 months'. Thank God for forums, especially this one. :)

Excellent stuff. Good luck with that - I think you have the ability to improve your condition quite significantly.

Yes, I saw the meds in your profile, but now I see they were not for blood glucose.

Hi All.
As a further suggestion - idea with this current debate on this thread.
There is also Sir steve redgrave and his 'mrs' is a GP too...
Who if he is also a lower carber eating diabetic ?
May be open - willing to future ideas and concepts for changes?
Within the NHS advice on HCP training and future patient counselling on diet(s)
Anna.

Steve Redgrave as you say uses a pump, he also eats anything he wants too.

Its very frustrating isn't it - rying to find some way of getting anyone wih any "clout" to take notice? We are up against the establishment and it takes a scandal or ragedy directly related to he issue to make an impact.

In most cases the producers etc decide that going against received advice is not worth it or of little interest o the majority of viewers/listeners/readers. Its srange when yu think that we are bombarded with warnings about the diabetes "epidemic
that we can get noone in a position to help to listen.

It all seems quite illogical to me. Perhaps because it is.

There's a good write-up on Runsweet regarding Steve's diet and his experience with diabetes:

What about DISPATCHES ... they specialise in controversial/undercover stories - NHS, Banks, Politics, Food industry, Pharmaceuticals, Religion etc ... they did one called something like 'Can you trust your doctor' which seems to have been removed from Youtube now.

I've had a good look through and haven't found one which directly relates to NHS and Diabetes, so there may be a niche there - but I've found these for anyone who hasn't seen them -

While I will absolutely throw my support at anything that will get the message out about carbohydrates and diabetes, I think we all need to be prepared to be brushed aside and ignored. Many people/places just accept that our complaints are a small group of people, so wouldn't attract a large tv audience. While I don't happen to think that is true, I lean toward people who are diabetic watching out of curiosity if nothing else. This is going to be a project that is going to have let downs and disappointment before it has any success and we all need to be very aware of that.

**** good point Defren, it is very much like P*****g into the wind.

Done. lightwolfe..

c'mon people, this needs everybody on board !

Just thinking - I have had some informal exchanges with Jonathan Amos (BBC Science Correspondent). He seems like a very clear-headed and reasonable guy. Maybe I will stick my neck out and ask him what he thinks might be the best way to go about this.
