NHS Diabetes Type 2 “Pathway to remission” Programme

Newbie
Hi, First post here for me

I am 63 days post diagnosis and have been following a LCHF diet for most of the time since (except for a few blips and a few days off the wagon at Xmas)

When I went for my first diabetic eye screening this week at the Hospital I saw a poster advertising this programme and have applied to join and been accepted after a GP referral.
The programme is education meetings following a decreasing frequency over a year but starts with weekly meetings and a funded VLC meal replacement diet for 12wks. They weight you, check bloods and provide you with some equipment I believe. I’m not hugely interested in the meetings/educational side of it as I have found all NHS advice so far rather **** as others in this site have noted. Being told to just have ‘a bit less’ potato on my dinner etc which wouldn’t have made any difference to my levels had I followed it.

I’m 4-5 stone overweight with high blood pressure so I think a big weight loss will really change things so I’m doing it for the funded diet plan initially and will see how the meetings go.

Has anyone else done this or is signed up?

Hi there :)

I had a quick look for info on the program and it appears it's very new, which is possibly why nobody has replied. The web page for it first appeared around April 2023 as far as I can make out, and it is limited to specific areas.

I for one am very curious about how this goes. If you do decide that you're going back to a LCHF diet after the 12 weeks of soups and shakes, be sure to tell them all about it in great detail. Data about things like your cholesterol levels might, maybe, be put right in front of members of the advisory group at some point in future, if there enough other participants of the program who also choose LCHF. It would take enough LCHF people to make a 'cohort', however many that is. That would be interesting ;)

Hi @EmmaLouise1 .

I might be mistaken, but that sounds remarkably like the old Newcastle diet....

A quick search on forum gives an example

Some found it very useful.

Personally I was in the camp that thought as you need to shift over to an alternative diet at month 3, why not do that at the beginning ?

The idea of sub 1000 cals for so long didn't appeal to me.

Not sure the results panned out for many.
Relapse rate was high iirc.

Sure others found it helpful
I hope you do too.
Good luck with the trial.

Thanks both. Yes I believe Momenta are linked or possibly used to be involved with the Newcastle diet. Google brought up previous versions of the programme but none appeared to fund the products and equipment.
I’ve done total food replacement diets before- at times successfully and at times not but I’ve always put it back on.
I do just feel unwell with this so far as even though I’m managing my diet very well (between 4-8 almost all the time) I still have diabetes symptoms so I’m in a rush to feel better.
I am sleepy tired all the time, exhausted which makes me grumpy, not motivated at work and just missing out on life as all I want to do is watch tv or sleep.
I will feedback if it’s any good

Starting very low cab can give you "carb flu" as your body adjusts.
It can take a few weeks for your body to fully switch over to running on fats.
Slips off the wagon can start the adjustment period all over again.
Best of luck!

I have my appointment with momenta tomorrow, how did you find the programme? Was it worthwhile?
