I have been offered a place on an Expert Patients Programe. I'm 67yrs old,Type 2 (tablets and insulin) and have been for 13 yrs.
Has anyone attended one of these programes and are they worth attending?

Hi all,
I have done this course, I was referred for it via my DSN manager who has taken over my patient care now.
There was 12 of us on this course, 5 of us were diabetics, I was relieved there was others and I wasnt the only one! Others had various health conditions. [the course is ideal for everyone]
Attendance of the course was once a week for 6weeks, 2 and half hours sessions.
The course agenda consisted of.
Week 1. Problem solving
Week 2. Stress management
Week 3. Healthy eating and lifestyles [ here we discussed and learned about carbs and meds/insulin ]
Week 4. How to get the best out out your HCP's and healthcare appointments
Week 5. How to self promote and achieve positive thinking and confidence
Week 6. Recap of the 6 weeks and discussed on going planning from things discussed and learned
We were invited to bring along a friend or family member to the sessions for a bit of support if we wished to. I ended up with my mum attending and thoroughly enjoying the course herself too. She got a lot out of it... It helped her enormously actually!
On the last session we all recieved a certificate too! :D
I would certainly recommend this course of living with a longterm condition, it was great to meet others and discuss, learn, grow and develop. :D
Hope this helps explain a little about the course.
Anna.

I had an invite to go on one with the letter that came about my flu jab. There is a course in my area starting on Monday. Asked my boss if I could go and he said he couldn't see any benefit (for the business) in me going, so I can't go :(

That's awful Denise. You should point out to your boss that if you learn to control the diabetes then it could avoid sick absence and possible loss of man days in the future!

I am starting the same course this Tuesday for 6 weeks. It is only on mornings or afternoons so, in order to attend, I have to take time off work. I work flexi hours and have agreed to work up the extra hours during the rest of the week. Surely your boss could compromise and come to some sort of agreeable arrangement.

I don't know whether or not the course will be worthwhile but I am willing to try anything and want to learn as much as I can to avoid complications in the future.

Good luck :)

I've got my theories as to why my boss has said no.
1. His partner has T2 and seems to be fine
2. I've been diagnosed for 4 years (just realised that it was 4 years ago today that I was diagnosed)
3. A colleague has just finished a living with ADHD course - her son has ADHD (she did this in her own time, but I allowed her to work flexibly to cover it).
4. I only work 4 days a week so I think he thinks I should do it on my day off.

I am going to let the organisers know that I can't go on it on Monday, but will put my name on the list for future dates (which hopefully will be on my day off).

It can be very isolating having a condition that nobody else you know has, I think this course would be beneficial to me. I want to keep as well as I can for as long as possible.
