Hi all.

I was wondering if anyone ould help me with a quandry. If I was to buy myself an insulin pump (which I an just about afford) would i be able to get the insulin refills on the NHS? (as theres no way i could afford the cost over time of this) in the same way i get my insulin pen cartridges.
thanks in advance

You can't just nip out and buy the pump and consumables, you need a doctor's approval. This doesn't mean seeing a doctor privately - your Consultant or GP would do this so you'd still get insulin on the NHS.

Its not just the pump either.. With the sets, tubes etc then it is a huge drain on finances each month.

It is unlikely that your CCG would pay for the insulin if they didn't authorise you to have the pump in the first place.

Sorry, I don't believe this. DerangedFlamingo is already prescribed insulin, surely the method he chooses to administer that makes no difference to them, as long as it doesn't cost them more!

I don't think they would pay.
Depending upon the insulin cost.. Ie if it was pump cart insulin... Its more expensive.
If it was all signed off by a consultant (as mine was for degludec) it was queried as soon as the script went before the prescription clerk at GP and refused.
I don't know how the systems highlight on GP computers etc but there is a chance it would be declined...

Can't say it for definite. The best persons to ask is the GP or consultant in that specific CCG.

I seem to remember that if you start paying for any prescribed item, you're expected to pay for all prescribed items. You can't pick and choose. It's a vague memory so needs checking.
