Hi all My 14 daughter was diagnosed 4 weeks ago and is doing really well and manging to keep her blood glucose between 4 and 8 most of the time with only the odd mild hypo and random highs!!. She saw her consultant for the first time this week who asked her to add night time BM tersting to her regime something we have not done since she was discharged from hospital. As her BM in the moring is usully around 5 is there any benefit to disturbing her sleep ??

The benefit may be for the Consultant, yourself and your daughter knowing that the levels in the night are not dropping too low, nocturnal hypos are something you need to be aware of and try to avoid. I wouldn't imagine she will have to do it too many times.......

Did you ask why the Consultant wanted her to do this and for how long ?

He/she sounds like they are just checking things out as she is recently diagnosed. If there is signs of NH they can usually be prevented in one of two ways; either by decreasing your basal (background) insulin, or by having an extra snack before bed.

Hi,

my nurse asks me to do tests at 3am occasionally, especially as i'm on an insulin pump.

It's important so you have an idea whats happening overnight, you may catch a hypo that you wouldn't usually so it can be very useful, you could also maybe see she may be going higher in the night but dropping back down before she wakes up and thats something you also want to avoid.

My nurse usually suggest i do this only a few days at a time, and doesn't demand i do it, just suggests it's a good idea and quite beneficial so i would say a few nights of disturbed sleep wouldn't be too bad if you were to see something unusual.
