Hello, i was after some advice please.

my son is 8 and was diagnosed when he was 3. For nearly 2 weeks now hes waking between 3 and 4 am with readings between 24 and 28. He'd had a cold so at first i put it down to that then last Sunday he woke and they were 32. He was throwing up and couldn't stand, it looked like when hes suffered a hypo, i got him to wee on a stick and it turned purple. We ended up calling an ambulance because he couldn't stand up. He had his obs done every 30 minutes at the hospital but we were waiting for a doctor for 3 hours and he started coming round. They said aswell as ketones he had other things in his wee and sent it off and they said he had a urine infection and started him on antibiotics. He finished them on thursday but his night readings are still high. Im not letting him eat after 6pm. He ive upped his levemir a unit and nothing is making a difference. When he goes to bed his numbers are fine, when i check around midnight they are still fine but between then and 4am they are rising to the high 20's i give him the insulin the meter says he needs but by him waking at 8ish they have only dropped to the low 20's and yet during the day they stay below 8. I don't understand what is going on. Hes at the hospital on the 29th jan but its a long time to wait for answers.

Sorry its so long.

Oh wow this must be so difficult for you both.. I really hope someone comes along to help you as so many people on here know what they are doing.

Just wondering if you could call your diabetic team over the phone tomorrow and ask for guidance..if it was me, and I had high readings at any point in the night I too would increase my background insulin so I think you are doing the right thing. Hope you get some good advice soon.

Hi

When your som's levels are say 20 when he wakes do you do a correction bolus to bring him down?

Ie he's not just naturally dropping with the background insulin?

Is the background dose given once in 24 hours ir is it split in to two doses?

I really would try speaking to your hospital DSN by phone tomorrow. They won't mind, you don't have to wait for an appt...

Thankyou for the replies. He was on 12 units of levemir given at 6pm but in the past 2 nights ive upped it to 13 and then he has 4 of the same when he wakes up. I give him a correction dosage of novarapid when they peak between 3 and 4am and then have to give him another when he wakes on the morning. Last night and tonight after giving him 13 at 6pm hes had hypos yet it didn't stop them rising to 28 through the night so i daren't give him a higher dose. I have been testing him frequently during the day and his readings have been better than normal but obviously that makes no difference if they are rising so high on a night. Im going to ring the hospital tonorrow and try and get a contact number for his diabetic nurse.

The hypo's are they 2-3 hours after eating?
