hi i am 63 diagnosed with type 2 nov 2007 currently on metformin 1000mg twice a day and sitagliptin 100mg once a day. this seems to be controlling things ok my hbac is approx 7.4 new tests due soon. my question is about excessive nighttime urination. for the last say ten years i have had to get up to pee on average twice a night this does not really bother me as i go back to sleep ok. in the day i drink mostly tea and coffee but i rarely drink anything after 6pm. i do go out twice a week but on those occasions i usually have one half of lager. this is out of choice i am not restricting it for any reason but on those nights i find i have to get up to pee at least 3 times if not 4 and i pass well over say a pint and a half. does anybody else have similar problems and any reasons why. incidentally if i have beer instead of lager it is worse for some reason

Hi and welcome to the forum.

High blood sugars will make you pee excessively regardless of how much you drink. As you say that your fluid intake is not excessive then this is probably the cause. It is your body's mechanism working to try to get rid of the sugar in your blood. Do you measure your blood sugars prior to going to bed?

Aiming for a lower HBA1c might do the trick. An HBA1c of 7.4 means an average of your readings so there will be times when your readings are higher than this. Have you read the information that Daisy, (a Monitor) hands out to newly diagnosed? viewtopic.php?f=20&t=17088

I am assuming that you do not have other health problems that may make you pass more urine during the night.

As a 63 year old male, this may simply be a case of "anno domini"..... the prostate gland typically increases in size with age, impinging on the bladder and urethra, and one of the first signs of this is the need to get up to pee in the night. So it may be nothing to do with diabetes, but more to do with your age and gender.
Typical symptoms of an enlarged prostate are frequency (which you are beginning to experience at night), hesitancy, urgency, and failure to completely empty the bladder, which are delights you have yet to experience! I suggest you visit your GP, who will do a brief rectal examination and probably tell you your prostate is a little enlarged, and order a blood test just to check for PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen), to eliminate the very small risk of prostate cancer (which is eminently treatable if caught early). I'm not a doctor, and have no qualifications to back up the above, except for considerable personal experience. Get it checked out, and put your mind at rest.

thanks for the helpful comments. to catherine i will have new hba1c tests some time this month but i fear i will not be able to stick to a completly rigid diet structure. to marvin i do have an elarged prostate but have recently had mri scan and ct scan on bowel area and no problems found. i was really trying to find out how just one half of lager could basically double even last night particularly treble my output

Hi Derekp, if you do have an enlarged prostate (prostatic hyperplasia) then as I'm sure you know this would cause nightime urination. My Husband was given some Tamsulosin Hydrochloride capsules, one to be taken daily and this has sorted out the problem of getting up many times in the night (until we get back the biopsy result). This drug relaxes the smooth muscle prompting improvement in obstructive symptoms. It might be worth asking your GP about it, if you are not already on it, regards, Debra x

Hi Derekp,

I'm a 57 year old male and have much the same experience. I usually need to get up at least once through the night but more if I've had tea or alcohol in the evening. Also, when I'm being really good dietwise and losing some weight, my body seems to turn it into urine. Volume out doesn't seem to equate to volume in at all. At worst, I can be four times a night but this is rare. Doc had a look some time ago and didn't think there was anything to worry about on the prostate front so I've put it down to age for now.

It's one of the many things I'm hoping may get better if I can lose more weight.
