Hi I'm a type 1 diabetic and have been since 2001, I was told it is quite uncommon for someone my age (37) going straight to type 1 as it was usually teenagers that get it.
I had my sugars really well controlled and then in 2008 I got necrotizing fasciitis in 3 areas of my body, basically my injection sites, which are the top of my left arm, my left buttock and a small area of my right thigh. I had surgical debridment of these areas and spent 3 months in hospital and numerous operations and skin grafts followed.
I still have operations for reconstructive surgery and surgery for more skin grafts to gain movment in my arm. I have limited use of my left hand as there was quite alot of tissue and muscle removed during the operations that saved my life. I have extensive nerve damage in my left arm and hand due to the surgery and am in constant pain from my arm/hand and left hip bum area. I am on many pills which include Morphine, Fentanyl. lorazapan, amytriptalyne, mitazapine, asprin, paracetamol, thyroxine (underactive thyroid) and tramadol when needed. I also have metformin for my diabeties with humalog and lantis insulins. Lidocaine patches for the pain in my arm/hand and hip/leg.

I just dont seem to have any energy wot so ever. I have always been energetic, even when I was diagnosed with diabeties. But since having necrotizing fasciitis, which now is gone because they had to cut it out of me. I now have no energy and find the most basic tasks tire me out. my sugars usually hang round the 14 mark or i'm hypoing, I get hot and cold for no reason and just dont have energy to do anything. When I wake up I feel worse than when I went to bed. if my sugars are below 14 before I goto bed I will hypo before breakfast. I have tried Iron tablets but they dont seem to have any effect and I still seem worn out. All I want is a little bit of energy to do normal stuff and work through the constant pain I am in. I dont binge out on carbs and dont really over eat. I do have ceoliac and therefore cant eat quite a lot of foods anyway.
Anyone got any ideas as to how I can get my energy back

Thanks in advance

I think you should see a specailist, maybe an endocrinologist. With all the complications and different drugs you are taking I wouldn't think any GP could successfully sort you out. Hope you get things sorted soon.

HI wkd,
Lantus can cause debilitating exhaustion for many people-check out the "Lantus Problems" thread in the "medication & drugs section".

I don't think you have a 'lantus' problem, I think you are taking too much Lantus and not enough Humolog. A likely reason for morning hypo is too much Lantus, you need to resuce it by 2u at at time until you can go to bed 'in range' and wake up on a similar number. Lantus is just to cover the Glycose that the Liver produces so you can do fasting checks too see if you have got it right and you should remain stable without the need
to eat or correct.

Them If you are high during the day, you need to increase your Humolog to cover the food you are eating. Do you Carb count? It's good with Humolog to use 1u pee 10g of carbs to be eaten as a start point and adjust this as necessary as everyone is different.

Thank you for your replies :D
I do also have a under active thyroid and ceoliac but have had this since I was diagnosed diabetic.
I have been on lantis for a while and not really felt as tired as I do now  I dont count carbs as I never was shown really, I used to have my bloods under control even when I come out of hospital afer I got NF after I recovered I still had energy, its only the past month or so I been really bad. I have had 18+ operations which 2 was this year. I cant seem to test as much as I would like as I get told off, when I go into hospital my sugars are all over the place as they take my insulin off me. Last time I was in hospital I was refused my insulin and the nurse had a big arguement with me when I asked for more insulin. I had sugars of 14 and she wanted me to eat my evening meal without insulin because I had some after I had a snack. I refused to eat and had to wait till bedtime for insulin. I had a doctor come in telling me she was a specialist nurse, wot a joke she thinks I should go out shopping and leave my insulin in the fridge. I have always been told not to have your insulin untill the food is infront of you, but the nurse wanted me to take it 10mins before meals. So it is hard to control my sugars because when I get them under control the hospital messes it all up again.
I have now got my sugars back under control with no hypo's but still have very little energy. I will be having another op probably before xmas :( so I wont have them under control for long :(

I am looking into my diet and see wot foods may help and should see my GP next week, Ill let you know how I get on :D
