Hi
I've been doing the LCHF diet for 2 months now and have lost 8lb
However I can't seem to get into ketosis lately -
0.2 on the ketone blood meter is about as high as it goes
What am I doing wrong ?
I always have under 20g per day too

if you measure your urine it is not everyone that shows ketosis on chose strips... especially not when adapted to ketosis..

you could try to eat pure fat for a few days... no proteins... if you eat more proteins than you need then the excess protein will be transformed into glucose and then make it harder to get into ketosis so also proteins must be restricted, but it is though important to get the protein one needs basically which to most are around 0.8 grams of protein pro kg bodyweight

Sometimes too much protein can keep you out of ketosis as well. The liver will convert it to glucose. If you are keeping your BG in range and losing weight then what you are doing is working.

Hi. I use a ketone blood meter as well. What I have noticed is that, although I always have less than 20g carbs, I will come out of ketosis if I eat too much protein (more than about 70g in my case). I think this is down to gluconeogenesis, where the liver turns the amino acids in the protein into glucose (it's trying to help really). So keep the protein down if you can, this is not Atkins! The recommended level is 0.8 to 1.0g per kg of target body weight.

Thanks it's just that my weight has stayed the same for the last 3 weeks . Not even a pound .
I'm having bacon sausage and eggs for breakfast ,
Sometimes half a lidl protein roll with cheese for lunch and meat and veg for tea . Would this be classed as too much protein ?

I weigh 60kg so would that be around 60g protein per day?
Hi. My numbers would give you 48 to 60g per day. The biggest problem is lean meats like chicken breast, lean ham etc. But eggs and cheese also contain a lot of protein. I like to eat softer cheese, pate, salami, chorizo etc, where the ratio of fat to protein is high. You have to really study the nutrition labels to know what's the best for you.

Thanks for your help. I have just worked out that my breakfast and lunch alone would be around 44 g of protein so just thinking what I could have for tea that doesn't include protein as chicken or pork would probably take me over

When I'm stuck, I have berries and double cream or just a piece of butter. A lot of people like coffee with double cream, although I like mine black. Another favourite is celery and cheese, although you need a cheese with a high fat/protein ratio, like St Agur, Roquefort, Stilton, Boursin.

Ooooh Boursin my favourite ! I have it most days on half a protein roll.
I'm going to change my breakfast to just 1 bacon 1 sausage and 1 egg then have full fat Greek yoghurt with berries for lunch . That will give me around 25g left for tea

you can use macadamia nuts they are almost pure fat and the same with brazil nuts which I love myself

yes and cream.. two spoon fulls of whiped cream

I've just checked my ketones .
It is The highest level on the ketostix then checked on blood ketone meter and it is 0.1
Does anybody know what this means

I have had some iffy test sticks with my ketone meter, which is a bit off as they cost nearly a quid each.
If you can afford it, try again. Otherwise, it is unlikely that the urine strips will show ketones when there aren't any, they normally under-record if anything. Also, you can be in ketosis without it affecting your urine when your body gets used to the condition.

Thanks I'll test again. I've also been very very tired with no energy this weekend . By BG levels are in normal range

Oh dear! Sorry about the wasted stick. So it looks like you are not in ketosis, perhaps your bladder contents were out of date. Are you sure you haven't had extra carbs or protein, even inadvertently?

That's ok I get them on prescription
I've had 20g carb and I don't think I've overdone the protein
It's very complicated this diet isn't it !!
