I've been properly unwell. With flu. Even though I had a flu jab a few months ago. I think I'm on the mend as I'm feeling a bit betteer but my throat still feels like it's been disinfected with blow torch. To that end I have been getting thru ice cubes at rate to concern polar bears and as my appetite has been poor I have said sod the blood sugar and had ice cream every day (just one small portion). The blood sugar has been good apart from today when it was up to 6.8 before teatime meal and I wondered if drinking no sugar added dilutable lemon drinks would have affected it. The bottle says no carbs or added sugar but lists a load of sweeteners with long names. I'm not sure if I can post the name of it?

Hi there.

Drinks that state "no sugar added" doesn't mean "no sugar" just that none has been added. There will be sugar in it. All fruit juice is a perfect example of this and although it contains "natural sugar" it's still sugar and will be dangerous if too much is consumed.

Go for drinks that state "sugar free" as this is a much safer bet and it will contain no sugar (though there will be artificial sweeteners added) If there was sugar as an ingredient the company would get done under trade descriptions

Just from my own lived experiences I have never had any issues with sweeteners on my sugar levels (some of us might) so this does not affect my management of my Type 1 but I always make sure that I purchase "sugar free" opposed to "no sugar added"

Stay away from the latter......

I'm chocca with cold at the minute and have a throats like I've been sucking razor blades - I don't normally drink diet drinks outside my meals but have been having Tesco no added sugar black currant squash made with hot water - very soothing and comforting- it's negligible carb and hasn't seemed to affect my blood sugar.

Also drinking Pukka teas lemon & ginger with manukau honey - I was a bit wary about the honey part of it but reading the ingredients it says "honey flavour" and it's quite a way down the list of ingredients- anyhow it's not affected my bs and it's nice and soothing on the throat - hope your better soon :)

I have Robinsons no added sugar squash and it hardly affects my BS at all it is 1.2 g of carbs per 100 ml of concentrate so quite low when dilute but I don't drink a lot of it just the occasional glass.

Thanks for the replies. Off to the doc later as bit white bits on the tonsils now and volcanic pain. I'm trying to be mindful about sugar but have no appetite for much anyway. Just need to find a way to fast freeze my throat till it all goes away.
