Non diabetic people

Ignore the "muggles" ! Why would they care about diabetes ! I know extremely little about Parkinson's, MS, mental health, cancer etc as I fortunately don't suffer with them. It's only when you have a need to know that you take the time to understand.
 
So do I. But then I stop and think about how I don't really understand everything about diabetes, even though I have been type 1 for years and years. It's a complicated condition. Treatment evolves. Do you think there is good information about it out there for the general public? I don't.
 
Oh the information is out there but people won't spend hours trawling the internet on something that doesn't affect them ! Would you ?

I can cope with people not understanding, why should they, but I do get very annoyed with muggles making ridiculous assumptions about what It means to be diabetic, what I should be doing to "cure" myself (usually some herb or homeopathic remedy their friends Dads aunt used) and no, I didnt "catch it" from eating sugar.

The Daily Fail has a lot to answer for.

A favourite one of mine is "Do you still take sugar in your tea?"
 
We can live with a Type 1 diabetic, learn about their lifestyle and how they overcome the highs and lows but we cannot know how they physically feel until we too join the club. However, I still don't know how a Type 2 feels.
 
My diabetes generally doesn't spill out in to every day life.....

I think being type 1 and having a more flexible diet than a type 2 helps I suppose.....

But no one makes any assumptions.......which is fortunate....

The worst thing is finding a condensed way of explaining to someone what diabetes is who has no idea! I never know where to begin or end

I've been T1 now for 48 years and if you were to ask me about T2 I really wouldn't have much of a clue. Unless it affects you personally, then it's not your problem. Sometimes a little knowledge can be more dangerous than no knowledge at all.
 
It doesn't bother me what people say or suggest I just nod and smile and that usually satisfies them if they think you are agreeing with them
 
i think most people with some sort of Chronic Condition feel like this, its the ignorance of just the general public. but if i hear one more time that ive done this to myself (type 1 wasnt overweight) i will lash out at them. or another favorite of mine is when im having a hypo in work, people trying to get me to do things and then getting annoyed that im just sitting still and not immediately jumping to it.

or im sure every diabetics favorite line "i though you couldn't eat that"
