This morning, just as I stepped out of the shower, I suffered a heavy nosebleed. I haven't had one since I was a kid so I was wondering if it was part of the 'diabetic experience'. I was diagnosed Type2 in April last year, was started on Glucophage (in the UK it's called Metformin) and two months later had Januvia added. Was this just a one-off thing or can I, as a diabetic, expect more nosebleeds. It wasn't a pleasant experience as I was trying to staunch the blood, put on my bathrobe and dry myself off. As a result the bathroom looked like the Texas Chainsaw Massacre before my wife arrived to help. :D
Anybody else suffer nosebleeds?

Hi Bill,
Haven't heard a connection to diabetes, someone correct me if I'm wrong.
Blood thinners, deviated septum, sinus problems?
If you cannot relate a possible cause and it is a one off then would mention it to the Dr. when you see him. If it becomes more frequent then make an appointment for advice.
Hope this helps,
Catherine.

if it happens regular tell your dr as my mum had a couple of biggies and it was caused by a very high bp, apart from the bleeds she was totally well :D

Many thanks for the replies so far. My blood pressure is normally between low and very low. I haven't suffered from any signs of a deviated septum and I'm keeping my bs under control. Thinking back, I had a violent sneezing attack last night so some damage may have been caused to my nasal arteries. If it happens again I'll mention it to the endocrinologist at my next appointment, which is in June. I think that'll give me a sufficiently long assessment period to see if it's becoming chronic or was just a one off.
Thanks again for the help.

You may have ruptured a small blood vessel sneezing and then the of hot steam may have dilated the vessel enough for it to start bleeding again this morning.Hope you get it sorted Bill.

I think you've probably hit the nail on the head, Sue. By nature I'm not a worrier so I'll wait and see if it occurs again. :D

And as a PS, I just took my blood pressure and it was 119 over 68, so it's not a blood pressure problem. Further evidence for me that Sue's posting was probably right. Everybody else's posts were very much appreciated.

I dont know if its related to my diabetes, am type1, but i get nose bleeds often but i was told when diagnosed that my blood was low in whatever makes it clot so it takes longer for them to stop again not sure if its diabetes related

Well, it's been a week since the nosebleed and I haven't had a recurrence so I'm thinking that it was just a one-off incident and unconnected with my Type 2.

Although we are diabetics ,not everything that happens to us is diabetic related! It's very easy to think 'Oh this is because I'm diabetic' but sometimes they are totally unrelated.

Absolutely right, Sue. That's why I posted the question - I wasn't sure if nosebleeds were a result of having diabetes.
