Has anyone any experience of diabetes causing a smell?

For quite some time now ive had comments like "phew, whose done that?" from folk nearby, and im now paranoid, seriously.

I have a bath every day, use soap and sprays (but it isnt BO), i use mouthwash and brush my teeth and floss (but its not bad breath)

Ive deliberately stayed away from people I dont know, and been self-employed in a job which didnt bring me into contact with anyone, but im on the brink of a new trade which will put me into contact with the public at close range.

Im seriously thinking of not going ahead with it though

Everytime the comment is made I skirt round it or make a joke but I cant carry on with this, it is really getting to me, can anyone make a serious suggestion?

I know it sounds funny, believe me it isnt

aww steve,
sorry about your problem,
i havent ever heard of diabetes smelling but have u asked someone close to you if they can smell anything(your partner or someone),if they can all i can suggest is seeing your gp,can u smell anything? please see your gp though as its really affecting your life isnt it,good luck, amanda

I cant smell anything and - like all of us - I "pump" occasionally, but this never seems to be connected, ill have to see my GP, its getting me down now.

hya stevie,
go see your gp ,let us know what happens and try not to get too down

I had a medical last week (HGV/PSV) which included a urine sample/test, she said it was fine but would she be looking for sugar/protein/ketones?

Just a sugestion but have you got a skin infection bacterial? That would cause you to smell.

nope, not that I know of

did have "mans trouble" but not for a while

all i can smell is my deodorant - if I go over the top with it the wife thinks im playing away!

(chance would be a fine thing)

Have you got rolls of fat? I know "someone" who from time to time gets fungal infections under her bust & elsewhere. Fungal infection creams control it. Mycil & Mycil powder may be the answer.

I had a quick look last night and there are some articles on thenet about badly controlled diabetes having a 'fruity' smell ! Don't know if this applies.

From the comments of others (cos i cant smell anything untoward) its unlike any fruit drops ive ever seen on sale in shops....

been on metformin since '98

i was promised rapid weight loss when i was diagnosed diabetic, i never got it, can i complain?

At diagnosis I was told "In 10 years time you'll only have to inject once every 3-4 days". Still waiting 35 yrs later..... let me know when you find the complaints dept!

I'm thinking about complaining about the lack of weight loss - especially as they keep weighing me and telling me I need to lose weight. :?

I read about some young women/girls with diabetes deliberately not controlling it so they'll lose weight.
I thought about it for a second!
I'm type 2, so it wouldn't be TOO bad, would it? :?
Then I remembered what I was like before my glucose levels improved. Yup - it WOULD be very bad.
