Not coping

Hi i found out im march last year i was type1 & im not coping with it at all im depressed about the situation what can i do
 
Get a grip? Easier said than done.

First, get your thyroid checked, a common cause of depression and also common autoimmune disease, along with diabetes and all the rest.

I am not on insulin, so cant advice you here, but I have heard of diabetics of all kinds finding life and bg so much easier to handle on a low carb diet. Look into the low carb section of the forum and on other low carb sites too, there is a lof of support out there.

If you don't mind saying, how are you not coping? emotionally or with blood sugars etc?

I'm sorry that you are feeling so bad, the good thing about this forum is that everyone is really supportive.
 
No you are depressed so of course you cant cope! Been there a lot myself.

Get your thyroid checked soon AND antibodies as you are T1 and already have one autoimmune condition.

In mean time, go for lowcarbish to protect your health,

Do you have anybody close who can help you?

The only reason I can see for you to feel stupid is that you feel stupid,

You need help, you know you have friends/family who love you but may not understand exactly you position. If they are like other friends and family they may be helpful or at least loving and supportive.

Or if they are not, talk to your DSN or Dr.
 
This might sound daft, but try and think of needles as your friend now. It's the injections that will keep you alive and in good health. It can be easier said than done, but I genuinely believe a positive mindset can work wonders and maintain a person's health and wellbeing. Sometimes when people get into this depressive state at developing diabetes they find they just cannot get out of it and their health spirals out of control. If you get to grips with it now, take control and just get in with your life you can have a happy, healthy time ahead of you. Good luck.

You might benefit if you learnt to talk with us, or even better talk to those close to you. We are not all born with ability to pour our sorrows into the bosom of a relative or friend, or if we were, we could be rejected. Still, we must learn to trust or at least learn how to spot trustable people to help us.

I can see you have problems of more than one kind. If you want to be kind to yourself you start with a low carb diet and then you call your DSN or Dr, whoever you feel you can trust. Preferably on the same day!

And talk your mum, dad, siblings, friends or would.be friends. Give it a try. I know my family never gave much support when I needed it and they still think I wasn't very ill (with hypothyroidism), just moaning so if your family is like mine you might not find the support you need, but there are friends and uncles and cousins and a lot of other people.

Hi Kelly,

You need to let your G.P. and DSN know that you are not coping emotionally as there is psychological help available. This would be conducted in private on a one to one basis and may be what you need. You might find it easier to open up to a trained professional who is also impartial and will not be judgemental.

I hope other Type 1s will answer and tell you if they had the same problem and how they coped.

Hi Kelly! Nice to meet you! I am type 2 so I can't help with injections! Do you have a bs monitor? You should do if you're t1. I hate testing my blood but I do it. I think the advice you have received so far is really great. All of these people helped me when I was first diagnosed - my doc is useless. Once you tell people, you will be surprised at how many people have it or have a friend or family member with it. You are less alone than you think. Your dn will know of support groups which run in your area. I would also advocate this forum - look how many of us have replied to your post! Take care - big hugs x
 
Hi Kelly, even though I'm type 2 I inject 3 times a day. Even though I don't really have a problem injecting I sometimes look at things and think I can't do this, that's bad enough let alone being afraid of needles, it's just an idea if you went and had a chat with your gp and see if they can change your needles to a type that you can't see the needles you may find it easier that way

I know where you are coming from on the emotional side of things.
I collapsed when I was told I had type 1 diabetes. I hated everything and everyone. I searched and searched for something or someone to blame.
But there was nothing, there was no-one.
No-one in my family has ever had any form of diabetes and it wasn't down to my diet either.

I rejected I had diabetes and tried to live normally without insulin (would not recommend this!).
I took me a good few years to come to my sense's, I spoke to my specialist at hospital and they referred me to a psychologist.
I spent about 2 years going through things with her and with her help managed to get my life back on track emotionally and health wise.

Don't get me wrong, I still have my bad days and really bad days, and not the kind of person who shows his emotions very well anyway (im a male

Forums like this though are a great help, there like lots of friends you've never had and one of the great things being that chances are you'll never meet any one off these kinda things. Benefit meaning you can ask people on here thing's you may not feel comfortable telling your friends or family just yet.
Don't feel guilty or silly asking anything, better to ask then to sit and be unsure.

Coming on here was a great idea..........

Just simply talking about diabetes in general, your own personal diabetic situation or even just having a moan/rant can actually relive a lot of pressure from people.

Another good thing to come out from talking on forums like these is that you can learn more about diabetes and then you realize that it isn't as bad as you think it is...

Its still early days for you, it takes time to settle down, and that's normal, so just hang in there........
 
I echo what's already been said about seeking professional advice on these matters, there's a good support network out there but you do have to make them aware that a problem exists.
