Bit of useful reading for anyone into sports in general especially if its cycling, also the trials and tribulations of type1. There's a book called Not Dead Yet by the amazing Phil Southerland, I would really encourage people to have a read of this. It's people like this are getting our disease noticed and also showing the serious effects of diabetes but also that diabetes doesn't show us boundaries. Can easily say this man has been a hero when its comes to dealing with diabetes. Let me know what you think of it when you have a read or what you thought of it if you've already had a read!?

Re: Not Dead Yet!!!

Hi Sheil19

I love cycling and try to go out every day if I can. Im type 2 and really struggle some days with my bg levels I have recently started using carb gels which help a lot I just worry that I might be causing more problems for the future. Have you got any advice? Does the book give any advice in this area? :D

Hi Mayder hope all is well.

Definitely give the book a read as you will definitely pick up lots of helpful tips and its also a great interesting and insightful book. Phil does give some really helpful nutritional information and ideas that has really helped me. The book is about 95% positive but he also goes into the negative effects that goes with diabetes and exercise and also just day to day living with diabetes....failure is a key part in succeeding!!

I'm certainly no expert as I'm only diagnosed a year but I'm like a sponge when it comes to diabetes and I'm keen to get everyone's view and TALK about diabetes. This time 3 months ago I was in a horrible place with diabetes it had got grip of me big time, my sugars were constantly high and I was so stressed and down about it all. Today my blood sugar rarely gets above 7 and I exercise every day and I've never been in such good health in my life and I'm so positive about my future. Positive Mental Attitude is what I implemented in my life and I'd encourage you to try it. Obviously I'd rather not be a diabetic but in a way I'm glad I have it, I'm different to most others and it keeps me grounded!! It's given me great determination to succeed in sport and life.

Haha sorry for going on a bit of a rant but it just shows you can be down but YOU are the main person in turning your life around!!! Buy Not Dead Yet and have a read....guarantee you will love it, if not I'll refund you haha!!

Re: Not Dead Yet!!!

Hi Sheil19, thank you for your help! I am a type 2 and have been diagnosed 14 months ago. My blood sugars are always high 12 to 14 range when tested on my meter. Sounds like im in the place you were 3 months ago. I do try and remain positive but its hard when your diabetic nurse tells you to eat lots of cream cheese and celery. I have just switched doctors so watch this space. I will give the book a read and will get back to you! Thanks again
