My son is 6 and has been to GP today. I took himjust because he has developed thrush on his penis, and had it for 3 weeks, it clears up then when treatment stops it comes back.
Gp is testing his urine tomorrow for diabetes/infection, and taken a swab from the area.
I have 2 sisters and both of them have sons that have diabetes, my husband is type 2 diabetic.
So i am now worried that my son has it, although he isnt showing all of the syptoms, should he be!?
He complains of stomach aches and extreme tiredness, he says his legs ache, he has thrush, mouth ulcers. His appetite has increased, as he can have a good dinner/lunch and then wants crisps etc after.
Does he have to be showing the thristy symptoms also. I am so worried and hoping he isnt diabetic, i know its not the end of the world.
GP says he is very run down also, so i have started him on some childrens vitamins.
thankyou

hya and welcome,
it does sound like diabetes but could be many other things also, youve done the right thing by visiting the gp, try not to worry as if it is diabetes as u already know with it being in the family, then it isnt the end of his life, we have many mums of diabetic kids on ere so have a good look around and good luck with the results,
let us know how u get on and try not to worry :)

you've done what you can and are taking your son to the doctor
From here on, "What will be will be".
It's extremely unlikley, that, should your son have diabetes, you could have done anything to prevent it.
Whatever it turns out to be, I wish you and your little boy well.

Depressed People, Girls my age who think everything is about them and always whine about "Awwwwww, he's cheating on me!" and blah, blah, blah..
Hey there,

I don't know anything about the thrush, legs aching etc.

My symptoms were extreme tiredness, thirstyness, itchy feet, memory loss (usually in the morning), dry throat, among other minor symptoms.

Of course, the fact that your sisters sons have diabetes as well as your husband do make it possible, but still very impossible. Still, I remember having thrush on my penis around that age as well, and it turned out to be an ifection I believe, that was sorted easily. :)

I wish you the best of luck in your sons appointment tomorrow, and let's hope it's something else (although that probably sounds terrible, I'm sorry. :p)

Of course, if it is Diabetes, you still have this forum for your suppot, as well as your other family members.. If controlled properly, he can still lead his life as much as anyone else.

Good luck. :)

This all sounds fairly suspicious along with your family background

In retrospect I'd ask for a Glucose Tolerance Test - and make sure they give you the actual *numbers*. There's a strong genetic background to Type 2 (also check out MODY

http://projects.exeter.ac.uk/diabetesgenes/index.htm

Although it's not supposed to occur in children a small but significant percentage of Type 2s have symptoms going back that far. The sooner you find out what's occurring the sooner you can get on top of it. Fifty years of denial (not by me but by my doctors) didn't do a great deal of good.
