A HbA1c (IFCC) reading of 49 is still in the diabetic range. Diabetic range is 48 and above, pre-diabetic is 42-47, non-diabetic is below 42. But it is better than your previous readings. You should be able to bring it down to pre-diabetic or non-diabetic range by your next HbA1c test. However, this morning it has occurred to me the 49 is NOT good. Its borderline diabetic. I feel lost and confused now, and a bit scared. Can anyone point to to the chart which shows what average blood sugar level 49 is please?
First of all if I am not worry of lung cancer I could start smoking again while dismantling an absestos roof. What is the reasoning?
Also if I don't have a feedback loop I don't know if I'm doing the right things.
If I get a fever due the infection, should I check if is climbing over 40 C or happily take medicines that maybe are ineffective?
As you can well imagine, all the sensible advice is to make good use of the BG meter.
The problem with sensible use
10 days ago I had my Hba1c test done, as the hospital wanted to know if my abscess had been caused by my blood sugar levels going up.
This Monday I rang for the results. No result. It will be back tomorrow, ring then.
Rang Tuesday - result is back, but I cant tell you what it is until the diabetic nurse has seen it, ring Thursday.
Rang today, cant give me that information, need to speak to the doctor, no telephone appointments until next week. So I politely asked to speak to the diabetic nurse, and she will hopefully phone me back (perhaps)
There is no facility to register for online results at my surgery (wales). Only online facility is for ordering repeat prescriptions.
I feel upset and frustrated. Even if I go to the surgery, the receptionist cant show me the figure or do a print out. Its not available at this surgery.

No change of surgery possible. The next surgery is 20 miles away, I dont drive, and public transport is a joke.

It seems the 18/6 fasting and only eating twice a day hasnt altered anything for me. Not sure what to try next.

You need to find out what your rights are under the NHS. They could be breaking the rules by refusing to give you the HB A1 C number over the phone. You may be entitled to it so you need to look online and find out what you are entitled to.10 days ago I had my Hba1c test done, as the hospital wanted to know if my abscess had been caused by my blood sugar levels going up.

I bought an extra eat well plate when I did a healthy living programme run by my local council. They were larger than our normal dinner plates and perfect for pizza. Of course that was when I was young and stupid...And we all know what a success the eatwell plate is don't we?! (Sorry - please do forgive my sarcasm!)
I went to see the nurse on 21st June as I had fallen against my cooker and got hot oil from frying pan on my arm in 2 places and had 2 smallish blisters, after going back and forth to get the dressings changed the blisters had gone and the 2 resulting scabs were dry,on what I thought would be my final visit the nurse (who was a different nurse) said 'I'll just pop this on and it will be fine',the dressing this time was like a big plaster and covered both scabs,2 days later my arm felt hot and sore so I lifted the plaster and both scabs looked nasty, the big plaster had caused both wounds to get damp with no air able to get to them and I ended up at the local hospital at 9pm at night where I was told the other nurse(at my doctors surgery) had put me the wrong dressing on caused infection! I'm back tomorrow with 2wounds 10times worse than they were originally and had both doubled in size and are really sore.i'm gonna put in a complaint when I go back in the morning.i have no confidence in the nurse now and I'm gonna make sure I see a doctor tomorrow.10 days ago I had my Hba1c test done, as the hospital wanted to know if my abscess had been caused by my blood sugar levels going up.

Respectfully, (you know, that patronizing word with which one can begin a post) this thread began with the very real frustration of someone trying to simply get her A1c3 results, while she had been made to worry over her A1c3 levels being the reason why she had endured a nasty abscess. You have written several posts suggesting that the original sufferer ought maybe to have been channelling your patronizing self and approach to the very real run around she was getting from her surgery.
First, you ought know that the A1c3 is basically an on the spot result, In other words, the lab resulted it on the spot most likely. Then, she was put through a humiliating run around over the phone, in person, jumping unnecessary hurdles to get a result that she shouldn't have had to wait for.
We all ought be made partners in our own health care, not made hostage to the kinds of behaviors exhibited by the staff of the surgery in question. Not everyone has the luxury of traveling long distances in order to hope that voting with our feet will result in better care.
Lastly, we all ought be working for best practices everywhere for all of us, whatever country, whatever healthcare system. And that includes working with the patient, minimizing unnecessary costly visits, being vocal about less than best practices like the EatWell system, and supporting, rather than upbraiding or patronizing one another. Part of this is having patients as well as individual variable doctors and nurses have our health records and tests
Sometimes, if we have a few extra bucks for gas for long trips to preferred surgeries where we vote with our feet, we can, in fact, keep informed by finding the results of oft repeated tests ourselves. Dr. Bernstein sells a 12 pack of A1c3 tests at discount that you can give yourself in the comfort of your own home. This famous doctor has made these available at about cost because he doesn't have a stupid an attitude toward test results that Serendipity encountered, and I applaud db for recognizing as stupid. Note that there are cheaper versions of this test kit

I have the same problem when phoning up for my results of a blood test. I was told they couldn't tell me what the numbers were as the results may make me anxious. That alone made me anxious as I defined that as the readings had gone up. When I finally spoke to the doctor my blood/sugar levels had actually gone down quite a bit. I don't understand why they are seeming to want to make a secret if it.10 days ago I had my Hba1c test done, as the hospital wanted to know if my abscess had been caused by my blood sugar levels going up.

Thank you for that helpful information. I will take it on board. I would just like to add that the results had been in since Tuesday. The receptionist, when I rang on Tuesday, said they were in, but she couldnt give them out to me and told me to ring up on Thursday when she could give them out to me after they had been reviewed by the diabetic nurse. Then, when I rang today, the procedure had changed again. She is not a new receptionist, and it is a small surgical practice and she knows who i am.
