Hello
I was under the impression that some people can lose significant amounts of weight by low carbing, but whilst experiencing benefits to my blood pressure and my blood glucose readings, my weight loss is VERY slow and yet I am being really strict with my diet . I am about 4 stone overweight but I am losing at the most a quarter to half a pound a week. has anyone else found this or am I just unlucky?

Do as Indy says to rule those possibilities out, or in, as the case may be. Keep low carbing and you will eventually see a reduction.

Thanks for the suggestions. the gp checked my thyroid about 3 years ago and said it was completely normal although I am suspicious it isn't as I have no eyebrows and apart from my head, almost no bodily hair. I can take vit d tabs, I have some and did take them for a while. I am in my late 50s but I remember that when I was a young woman trying to lose a few pounds I had to go down below 1000 kcals to achieve it. It is very frustrating as I am exercising too.

But you do loose, even if the pace is slower than you would like. Keep at it. Being past fifty can contribute to slow the process down, for women at least, so I shouldn't worry. Do you eat enough fat?

A thyroid check can be wise, the older we get the greater the risk of hypothyroidism. IMO a TSH above 2.5 should be looked into, but my view sadly isn't shared by many doctors.

I am curious about the question from question from totto about eating enough fat. I really do not know how much I should be eating. For example, my usual breakfast is one large and one small egg beaten up and fried in a small knob of coconut oil with 2 bricks frozen spinach and 35g grated cheddar cheese.
Another problem I have is that hubby has CHD (he had a bypass last year) and currently wants to eat my higher fat diet but without losing the carbs ie his morning toast and cereal snacks in the evening. So I try not to have too much fat especially in what we are both eating. Although they now say fat may not contribute to heart disease, I really think that it might be a food combining issue i.e. if you have the fat you can't have the carbs?

I've lost just under one stone in just under 6 months, by following lchf. My carbs daily are usually 30-45g. My protein intake is 'normal', according to foodfocus.co.uk graphics, and I eat considerable amounts of fat, compared to when I used to buy low fat stuff. So now I eat cream, butter, linseed bread, original Total Greek yoghurt, cheese, eggs. I try quite hard to keep to low-carb foods. I only eat lean meat (small amounts) because I'm finicky about fat on meat. My weight loss has been quite slow, I suppose, but I don't mind as long as it's going in the right direction, and I have managed to get onto the Healthy Weight section of bmi. More importantly, I'm getting a better ratio of bs within target range, which is a great relief. I feel much better for it. So, I think I would say, don't be discouraged, do lots of testing and maybe recording, checking your bmi and doing low carb and enough fat, and, as others have said, your weight will reduce steadily. Good luck!:)

I shouldn't worry about your hubby and eating fat.

This is my understanding of cholesterol: The total isn't very interesting. You want your HDL high, triglycerides low but dont worry about LDL too much if you do have high HDL and low triglycerides.

And if you eat a lot of carbs you may get high triglycerides while on LCHF they will fall but HDL will go up and so will LDL BUT these LDL will be larger and fluffier and not so evil.

Regarding fat, I have heard of women not loosing weight if they go too low on fat while on LCHF. So eat fat, both of you. It is nice and healthy, so long as you stay off margarine and too much vegetable oils apart from coconut and olive oil.

Juliekem, I believe you are right in the association of high fat and high carb, so it may be as well for him to decide whether he wants the fat or the carbs. Do a bit of research on the net. You are doing fine on the LCHF diet, just keep on, do keep half an eye on calories as well though as fat contains a lot of calories, but you still need to eat enough of it so that you are not starving and then finding it difficult to stick to the diet. It may just take a bit of time for your body to really adjust.

sounds like your doing really well :) once you lose one pound, think of it as maintaining that pound loss and more loss is just a bonus :) remember 1 pound a month is nearly a stone a year, 2 years 2 stone, won't be long before your worrying about losing too much ;)
