Not Overweight

How can I do a Low Carb diet & not lose weight?

Hi and welcome.

Not everyone loses weight on a low carb diet (I don't). So it won't necessarily happen. My understanding is that it is more to do with insulin production and insulin resistance while low carbing, than it is to do with calories in, calories out.

So there are lots of things people can do to control weight loss while LCing, including increasing protein and fats, tweaking the amount of carb they are eating, adding in extra low carb snacks, and so on.

Are you diabetic? And how low carb are you going? And what are you eating while low carbing?

Janine, whilst I lost weight initially when I reduced my carb intake (the luuurve handles disappeared), I have maintained now for almost 3 years.

To be honest, the best thing to d is give it a go; don't go hungry, and keep an eye on the scales, if you really don't want to lose. If you start losing, then up the proteins portions a bit, then if necessary add further protein and/or fat.

I eat a lot on my reduced carb way of eating, and I'm certain many would gain on the amount of food I get through. My OH calls me a lean, mean eating machine.

Good luck with it all.

I lost all my excess weight over a period of time and then had to find a suitable way of maintaining. I found a way by adding cheese, which hadn't previously been part of my diet, and an extra egg a day. I also upped my butter. By adding these extra proteins and fats I found the right balance and have maintained now for 2 years and 4 months. I even reduced my carbs some more during that initial balancing period. It is a matter of food diary, regular weighing, and a blood glucose meter.

Hi. The body is very good at balancing your weight when it gets down to the 'right' level. Just have enough protein, fats and veg etc to provide a balance.

Hi thanks for your reply, Yes I am Type 2 diabetic caused by the medication I take for another condition !! Have been a diabetic for 7yrs initially easily controlled by low carb diet but caused loss of weight at one point 49kg and not looking brilliant at that weight but due to other medical condition the offending medication had to be increased, & increased some more over the last 12 months making it harder to control on diet alone & was commenced on 10mg Glicazide & advised to increase my carb intake slightly, the offending medication continued to need to be increased....& my blood sugars went from averaging around 4.9 - 7.0 to now averaging 7.9 - 12.0 . The Drs are wanting to commence me on Insulin which I am resisting. My Glicazide as been increased to 15mg daily, so I am tightening up on my diet but not wanting to lose too much weight I am currently 56.4kg . Carb wise I never recorded my intake, just ensured I chose the low carb foods unless a special occasion. I am in the process on getting my head round carbs & calorie intake & recording it all. Thanks for your reply & encouragement. Janine

Hi Janine, when I first low carbed the weight fell off me I went from a BMI of 24 to 19. I stopped it going lower by eating more nuts, macadamia are really calorific and low carbs. Eating loads of sugar free peanut butter, upping my extra Virginia olive oil.
All these measures increased my BMI a little and I no longer have any trouble maintaining my weight.
Good luck with this.

A low carb diet is NOT (necessarily) a weight loss diet! It just so happens that many people will lose weight on it as already stated. I initially lost a lot of weight but then, like @AndBreathe, I've maintained a steady weight for nearly three years now.

If you cut down on carbs and don't up your fatty/oily foods enough to compensate, then you will probably lose some weight, as your body will resort to using its own stored fat for fuel, but if you are eating enough then your weight ought to remain stable, so just give it a try. (It's called a low carb high(er) fat for a very good reason!) You may possibly lose a bit initially but this can be due to excess fluids being flushed out of your system, so remember to drink plenty of water too.

PS You don't really have to worry about calories, just cut the carbs and replace with fats and the calories should look after themselves. Rely on your meter for guidance.
