Hi Everyone,

Following my recent awakening, thanks to fellow members, and as promised, I started my new regime yesterday and have got results already.

Following your advice I intend to cut out cards as best I can and see what happens.

Well I can tell you what happens, instant lowering of BG levels.

It was only at about mid day yesterday when I decided to go down this route so I had already taken my waking BG which was 10.9.

Because I was feeling very low (depression) I then had a Cafe full English breakfast including baked beans & bread.
Followed by medication 1000mg Metformin & 160mg Gliclizide.

At 1100 my BG was 16.0 which dropped to 14.2 by 1300.

My first Carb' free meal was at 1300 when I ate sliced cold roast beef and a tomato.
Followed by medication 1000mg Metformin.

At 1400 my BG was 11.1.

At 1730 it was 5.2

Following my second Carb' free meal of more roast beef and a salad plus medication 1000mg Metformin & 160mg Gliclizide, the trend was downhill all the way.

From 1900 I took bloods every hour until 1130 and the resulkts were as follows:-

6.1; 5.5; 4.8; 3.8; 3.8.

Today my waking BG was 7.3.

Following brekky of scrambled eggs & ham plus 1000mg Metformin & 160mg Gliclizide, it rose to 9.9 but is now at 7.5 ready fo lunch.

I can't believe the difference just by not eating potato & bread.

I will keep you informed of my progress.

Chris.

Sounds good - but you are taking HIGH doses of Gliclazide. Gliclazide FORCES the pancreas to produce more insulin. If you are Type 2, this would usually result in weight gain, too.

The great thing is, that you MAY be able to lower your dosage of Gliclazide. If you are drastically reducing your carb intake (and it sounds like you are...) you will not need as much insulin as is released by the pancreas follwing 160mg of Gliclazide.

Just be careful with VLC (Very Lo carb) and high doses of Gliclazide. It's probably worth calling your doctor for a chat...

hya chris,
we told u it worked lol, congrats but keep something with u for hypos as u may need to see dr to lower meds if u carry on doing well :D

Great stuff Chris! You are already on the right track!

You have learnt very quickly how powerful diet is in this area of controlling blood glucose levels. However, don't try to go too fast without talking to your GP at some stage because he might very well want to review your medication.

Good luck and best wishes - John

Well done!

Now you've got the hang of it, you might discuss reducing the Gliclazide with your team. That stuff works, but it's nasty. As already said, It thrashes what function you have in the pancreas, causes weight gain and can cause hypos, especially if you reduce your carbs.
If you have a supportive sympsthetic DSN, now would be a good time to talk it through.
If he/she doesn't approve of reduced carbs, you may end up doing some experiments yourself. Always monitoring for safety anyway.
