Hi
I have just registered so new on here but I would like some advice please. Went to doctors for blood results after feeling very tired and always wanting to go to loo and two came back abnormal. One was cholestrol which was 6.7 and the other was blood sugar result of 47 mmol/mol. I have to go on low fat diet for three months being 2 stone overweight and have another test. Does this mean the result will go down for the blood sugar as well as cholestrol. She said if the blood sugar doesnt alter we will be going down another route as it is so close to the line of diabetes which I understand is 48? . So not sure do I have diabetes or pre diabetes or not at all. I know I should have asked her but I was so shocked I just flustered gathered up the papers she gave me and came home. Would be grateful for any advice you can give.

I don't think a low fat diet can bring those results down. A reduced carb diet would.

Hi. Your HBa1C shows your blood sugar to be near normal i.e. slightly elevated. I agree with Hanadr that going low fat probably won't make any difference to your cholesterol but reducing your carbs and portion sizes may help both. The point here, as many on the forum have pointed out, that consuming fat is not directly related to blood cholesterol despite the medical profession saying, simplistically, that it is. Reducing your weight should bring your BS down to a very acceptable and normal level.

Thank you so much for replying to both of you I feel much more reassured now. The thing I couldn't understand was that both my hubby who has Parkinsons and myself have been on a diet since November and he has lost nearly 2 stone and I have lost 3lb lol so was quite shocked at the 6.7 but as you say it could be the carbs. Been on a low fat diet for years as hubby suffers with cholestrol but I will take your advice on board and watch the carb intake and see if that makes a difference. She did tell me to not have mash as it is easier for the stomach to digest than jackets or even chips which I thought would have been a no go. Anyway will still keep an eye on portion control etc and see what the results are in June. Thanks again.

Hi. Yes, mash is the worst form of potato as it is so easily absorbed and converted to glucose. Chips are better as fat slows carb absorption when the two are combined.

That's so right...and just think how many spuds you would use to make a decent sized portion of mash ( its compressed).
