Hello people in this forum,

I'm not sure if I should be here as I don't have a diagnosis and am new to this world (48 hours or so new). I have hypertension and am on meds so have to have regular bloods tested......perhaps I should have been more regular as I went about 18 months between tests and then got recalled for a fasting blood test. I called to ask why and they said I had raised blood glucose levels of 12.0 but it might be a one off or because I had eaten etc etc. I went today and had the test after not eating or drinking since 10pm the night before and they took a nice lot of blood from me. They have said the results could take a week or so and I'm not really a patient person so I went and bought one of those prick your finger testers.

I tested straight away without eating or drinking still and it came up as 10.4 - I ate breakfast (toast) and then tested two hours later - 14.3 - again two hours later and it had gone down to 8.8 and I had lunch (chicken and salad baguette) - waited two hours and tested - 13.6 - waited another two hours - 10.5 - ate dinner (quorn sausages, onions, carrots/swede/parsnip mash) - tested final time - 12.0

Looking on different sites this doesn't seem too good. I have also been looking at types and must say, I am a might confused!! I have pancreatitis also - could this be a factor? I know I need to wait for my results but at this moment, waiting a week or so feels an awfully long time!

Opinions/advice???

Hi and welcome, at a guess I would say you have diabetes. But I am no doctor and you need to go to the doctor ASAP. Tomorrow would be a good idea to see gp let us know how you get on with things

I know it is difficult, but you do need to wait for a proper medical opinion. The levels do appear to be higher than 'normal' but I have no idea what impact, if any, pancreatitis may have on blood glucose levels.

Yes, I'm afraid a diabetes diagnosis is likely. Pancreatitis would almost certainly be a factor. You need to wait for the blood test result. I'm not sure whether pancreatitis would cause long-term diabetes or not. In the meantime do get hold of a meter and keep the carbs down

Well done for getting onto the case forthwith. Your blood test results will show why your BG levels are going up and the doc will/should know how to bring them down. It could be temporary or longer term. But I'm sure there will be ways of getting your levels down again and keeping them within the safe zone.
May I ask, have you been on a special diet due to your pancreatitis?

Hi and welcome,
those bloods are higher than a non diabetic but dont know what the effect of pancreatitis has on bloods so you will need to ask this when your bloods are back,i would write a list of questions and take with you when your results are back,
look forward to hearing what they are

Yes I feel confident in welcoming you to the club.

In the meantime I notice that your meals have bread in them. Bread is a problem for many of us and in my case will send my blood glucose levels way up. While you are waiting to see the doctor I suggest you cut down on it and, of course, don't have anything with sugar in it.

In my case, if I don't eat flour or sugar then most of my blood glucose problems are sorted.

Hello and thank you for your replies.

My tests surprisingly came back already - one day not a week which is impressive!

They couldn't see me today but spoke to me and confirmed I have diabetes. I am meeting the nurse next week for education and to talk about types and my diagnosis. And apparently I am off to a foot clinic and for an eye check - always nice to make new friends :o)

I have been carb free today but my levels don't seem to have realised that yet - but hopefully they will over the next few days and weeks.

I am expecting to have a weekend of research and planning diet and exercise before I see the nurse on Weds to start meds - I think I have a lot to learn!

you can't go too far wrong from reading some of the information on this site.
