Not sure if ill or set issue

Hello

I did my set change on Saturday and had ventured further round my side almost on my back. Two hours into set BG was 10 (high for me) but did eventually come down so set was working. I put this high down to over treating a hypo I'd had before change. Next morning I had my usual crumpet for breakfast (20g) and BG shot up to 11.5 which never happens. Pre breakfast had been 4.8. Again I got my sugars down with a lot of insulin. Basal BG seemed fine but bolus was the problem. However I still felt ill and nauseous even when BG was normal again so wondered if I was ill. This morning I thought I'd change set just to be on safe side. I don't normally do change before breakfast so BG might not follow my normal set change pattern. Woke up slightly low so treated. Changed set after dropping son at school and started feeling really sick again. Just before 2 hour BG test I tested thinking I was high but 4.7. Had quite a lot of IOB so thought I would start going hypo but an hour later still 4.7 exactly - weird.

By now it's lunch and I need to test set as not sure it's working right. Problem is I feel so sick have struggled to eat 2 slices of toast. No other symptoms just nausea and problems eating anything. Due to feeling sick I can't think straight either. Am I being daft and should I assume set is working as BG held but didn't drop?

I haven't ben correcting with a pen so far as I tend to only do that if BG reaches 14 or higher or if I'm sure set has failed. Right now I just need to be sure new cannula is working and I'm not sure how to work that out whilst being ill or if I'm even ill just because set isn't working right.

Insulin not a new batch and was all fine until last set change. Hate nausea :(

What is sugar water? Do I make that myself?

With a pump, it's standard procedure to replace the set regardless if you think it's not working correctly. This way you know that a problem with the infusion set can be ruled out. If bg is still high, correct with a pen.

Yes that's why I changed the set this morning but then because I was still having issues I wondered if I was ill. Wasn't sure how to check set without eating a meal. I forced down some toast and BG went to 7.2 and then back to 4.4 so I guess it's working ok (unlike previous one that was very strange). In the past I was too hasty to change sets at first sign of issue so now I try to see how it plays out - unless BG goes crazy high or I get occlusion alarm.

It's better to change the set straight away. I've left it in the past, much the same as you, and ended up in hospital with DKA within a few hours. At least then you have ruled out the problem with the pump and can treat appropriately.

Sorry you feel ill, have you tested for keytones? I would think if your cannula wasn't working your B G would be much higher.

Annie I have tested for ketones as was always told your BG had to be 14 or higher to get them. Is this not the case?

Will go and dig my ketone meter out as might be worth checking.

MPB, how are you doing?

From what you said, I would guess:

- set was not working
- replacement set IS working, but
- either you were starting to get DKA from the bad set, OR
- (more likely) you were just ill and it was a coincidence

I hope you are ok now though.

Hello - thank you for asking after me :)

I'm still not good and wondering if I need to go to the doctor. My current set has become sore and I am about to change it but I don't think this set is the problem. I have been low carbing because I can't eat much without feeling full and sick and high. My BG have been fine but possibly because of the low carb. Last night I ate a simple salad with grated cheese and that was fine. However I ate a crumpet for breakfast and felt really ill. Hoping I haven't developed gluten issues or IBS or something but I know us diabetics can be prone to gastro issues.

Off to get the set change out of the way and praying this one behaves itself because I have my son's birthday party on Saturday.

it does sound like a trip to the Dr is in order. if you are low carb, you need fats and oils for energy that was lost with the carbs.
stop grain and it's products and try meat/fish, veg, beans, lentils and some potatoe and other non grain starches. see how this goes after you see the Dr

OK weirdly since changing my set this morning I feel a million times better and have been able to eat. When I pulled the old set it was very red underneath and the cannula was curved, although not kinked like I'd seen before. There is a small lump under the skin too. The thing is my BG was fine on that set so how could it have caused my issue? I'm totally confused!!!
