Not sure I'm going to sleep tonight

Yep...been here since 11.30am but not been seen yet...surrounded by people coughing and sneezing everywhere too. Pffffffttt....
it's a joke! I remember once I sat in the dentist for near 2 hours before the receptionist came and old me my dentist was off sick! Apparently they'd tried to call me the day before. Why didn't they just tell me that when I went in and said I was there for my appointment rather than saying take a seat and leaving me for 2 hours!

Post when you've seen the doc.

Seen doc...results borderline apparently...will post full results later as i need to free up this parking space lol. Full blood count suggests infection but i already knew i had an infection.

To summarise...fasting bg a bit high but a1c ok. Wants repeat tests. Not checked exact figures yet...

A1c 44
fasting gluc 6.5
Cholesterol 5.6
Triglycerides 1.2
HDL chol 1.34
LDL chol 3.7
Total cholest 4.2

I'm off for a swim :)

I may be wrong but 44 for the HbA1c test puts you into the low ranges of the diabetic range.according to this link from this site:
http://www.diabetes.co.uk/what-is-hba1c.html

Certainly given your family history and the fasting blood results you've had, I'd be using the monitor that you said you had and cutting the carbs out to try and lower it for the next test.

Those are prediabetic (or marginal diabetic, depends whose ranges you look at) levels Loobles, in fact they are very similar to what mine are now (coming back). With care over diet you shouldn't have any problems getting it under control.

It does sound like it is the early warning, but at least it is an early warning and you can do something positive about it now.

Yes I agree with the others. A1c of 44 is pre-diabetic (42 to 47 is pre-diabetic) so you have had an early warning, and hopefully you can get that down to non-diabetic levels. Cholesterol looking pretty OK too!

That's exactly what I thought...I wouldn't say they were "fine" as the doctor just said. Ok I know they're not horrific, but I wouldn't say they're normal. I'm so glad I asked for a printout because otherwise I'd have taken his word for it.

I've already cut the carbs to a moderate lecel (about 100-120g/day for now) and upped the exercise and I don't plan to give that up as I already have more energy.

Again, that's what I thought, I think the doc was trying not to alarm me maybe, who knows? I was actually surprised at those cholesterol levels considering I'd just come back from 3 weeks of eating and drinking as I'd pleased in USA.

I think it takes longer than 3 weeks of bad eating to raise the cholesterol.

I think whether you call it diabetic or pre-diabetic is moot as at those levels it is still higher than a genuinely non-diabetic person and there is the risk that they will get higher. You might be lucky and never creep out of that range but I think you are doing the right thing given your family history. Exercise. weight loss if needed and watching the carbs are all going to help and at least by doing them , you are being proactive in your health care which always makes me feel better.

Absolutely, I've never been proactive before but I figured now was the time to start. It's been a big wake up call. I'm repared to be called prediabetic or even diabetic...I just want to know really cos then I can just get on with it. Not sure why the diagnosis matters really because diabetic or not, I've already started making the changes and I plan on keeping them going.

Get yourself a blood glucose meter as soon as possible.
Test repeatedly now, and then repeatedly once your infection has cleared up.

My BG rises by a good 2 points whenever I have a virus/stomach upset/infection.
If you hba1c is normal, then perhaps your current high levels are a bit inflated...

Don't want to get your hopes up too much, but it IS a possibility.

And I'm really surprised your doctor didn't mention it!

I do have a meter...had one for a long time as I did random checks with having such a strong family history.

Have had the infection for 6 weeks and it isn't going anywhere...actually that's why I've been tested for diabetes.

Looks like I'm most likely pre diabetic which is great news...lets hope 2nd blood test tomorrow confirms the same.

Went for repeat bloods this morning and it turns out they couldn't organise a "knees up" in a brewery...

Got there, to be told "oh the blood nurse is off sick this week". Even better, it turns out they knew yesterday when they booked my appointment that she wasn't going to be in. Have to go back at 9am tomorrow to their drop in blood service. Let's hope they can get the blood this time, because last time they sent me up to the hospital (**** veins) who I happen to know don't do bloods on a Wednesday morning...which means going back and repeating this again on Thursday *sigh*

In other news...can somebody remind me of the normal after meal blood glucose results? I tested my blood at 1 and 2 hours after eating 2 slices of toast...
On waking 6.2
1hr after toast 9.9
2 hrs after toast 6.2

what's your thoughts? 9.9 seemed high to me.

The NICE recommendations for type 2 diabetics are:
fasting and pre-meal under 7mmol/l
2 hrs post meal under 8.5

For non diabetics it is
fasting and pre-meal under 6mmol/l
2hrs post meal under 7.8mmol/l

Your local health service administration is disgraceful. If I were you I would complain to the Practice Manager. No-one should be treated the way you were yesterday and today.

+2 should be no more than 8.5 on a generous basis, or 7.8 preferably. I get uncomfortable (not physically) if +2 is more than 7. I don't think there's a specific guideline for +1, but I would avoid food that gives you 9.9 even if the +2 was OK. Toast is asking for trouble tbh, I am reviewing even my one slice with eggs for breakfast at the moment.

Definitely - and present them with an itemised invoice for your wasted time at a decent hourly rate (they won't pay it of course but it could be a good craic).

Be sure to drink plenty of water and have a warm shower. Both will plump up your veins and make them easier to find.

Hope you can get it sorted out as that is terrible. I would certainly pop in a complaint to the practice manager as that is not acceptable. It was far easier at my practice when the GP took bloods if needed at your appointment. Now you have to see the phlebotomist who actually can't take bloods out of hand, so she just stabs randomly in your arm then gets the health care assistant to do it. Then you need to speak to your GP for results, but they have a new system whereby you ring the receptionist, she puts your name on a list and he rings you back. Only you can't ring in advance and say can he phone next week and he only works 3 days a week anyway and they only ring about bloods after 4. Supposedly this change was made for patient's convenience! Luckily I don't work at the minute so can at least stand by the phone but what you are meant to do if you work. You also have to go through this palaver to get an appointment with the GP deciding if he wants to see you, which I think is one way of just cutting you off from health care and support. I've often gone along for some trivial thing only to break down in the surgery and reveal a much more troublesome issue. Now it's just going to be a case of I'll leave a prescription for you and no discussion as I hate the phone. Rant over.
