Not sure what to think

Hi I'm looking for some guidance if possible. I've read a number of posts on here and this seems like a great community.

I went to my local Lloyds pharmacy around 3 weeks ago and had a random blood test done to check for diabetes as I felt I was passing a lot of urine and getting hunger pangs for no reason though I have lost 3st in weight since May through cutting alcohol and taking up running and eating healthily. I put the urination down to the fact I was drinking 2 litres or more of water per day and nothing else.

Result came back at 8.4 so I was asked to do a fasting period of 9-13 hours overnight and come back the next morning. I went back and the fasted reading was 7.1 so the pharmacist referred me to my GP.

The GP did a full blood count and also another fastest blood test as I was still Within the 13 hour period. The GP result was 5.1 and full blood count showed all organs such as pancreas kidney and liver etc were all working fine. She therefore told me I didn't have diabetes and I went on my way. This was 10 days ago.

I was with the GP surgery today (different doctor) and mentioned I'd had the all clear but was hungry a lot of the time and she noticed her colleague hadn't done a hpac1 test and so they took bloods and sent them off.

I'm quite anxious about this now as I'm going on a family holiday Friday and the results won't be back before I go.

I suffer with health anxiety as a side and have high blood pressure and read that these can both affect blood sugar readings and so I'm not sure if the hunger and weight loss is associated with that as I don't appear to have any other diabetes symptoms having looked at the 8 sign checker

Any guidance would be appreciated as this is all new to me and I don't know if I'm worrying about nothing or need to prepare to change my lifestyle even more.

My wife has told me to forget it until after the holiday and enjoy the family time and the indulgence as I can't do anything about it until we get back but it's weighing on my mind.

Thanks in advance for any feedback

Paul

welcome Paul I´m afraid that noone here can tell you if you have diabetes... you´ll have to wait... most diabetics type 2 do not even know they have the condition when being diagnosed...and sometimes they´ve had it for years and even decades...

but you´ll have to wait and hear what the doctor comes back to you with of answer... best of luck...

Thank you for the reply here much appreciated. I'm trying to work out how my readings were compared to other people. They look borderline to me so I guess it's a waiting game and a pity my GP didn't do the hpac1 test at the same time they did the full blood count and fasted blood sugar!

yes they look borderline .. except from the 5.1 which is by doctors in general considered normal...

you can have a look at this page of the normal and diabetic levels before and after foods and fastings blood glucose number-range

I've had my bloods back from the GP surgery and all was fine - i didn't speak to the Dr just the receptionist. They didn't give me numbers of the HBAC1 but told me all was fine and no need to come back and see a doctor. It has opened my eyes to diabetes though and I will be adjusting my diet / lifestyle.

Thank you for the support / encouragement really appreciate it

Good news @Williamspaull23

Yes, even without diabetes it's always good to give your diet/lifestyle an overhaul every so often.

Wishing you the best of health

If I were you.. I would call back and ask for that number. If you are close to pre diabetes it would give you a great warning light and if you are completely normal then you can rest easy. Forewarned is forearmed and all that...

Hi all thanks for the pointer I've phoned the surgery and HBA1C was 30 which I think is fine and lower end of scale.

They also did full blood and liver pancreas kidney functions and all were clear

Thanks for the positive messages and support my eyes have been opened by this

Thank you - just had a look at your post and your weight loss results are inspirational - i've dropped from 110kg to 91kg and noticed a huge improvement in general health conditions. if my results were marginal now they must have been a lot higher beforehand
