Nothing seems to work

Hiya.

I would like to know if there are other people who seem to by uber-sensitive to either medication or insulin when trying to get there blood sugar down. I have tried four different types of insulin now, humulin I, Lantus, Levemerand the latest, Insuman 25 Combi. I am swelling up and putting on weight very quickly - half a stone in nearly a week. My stomach swells after I inject and I get headaches too. Not one of these insulins get my bloods down. It is always around the 19mmol mark in the morning. As for tablets, I have tried Metformin, gliclazide, pioglitazone and sitagliptin. Side effects from those range from severe constipation, dizziness, migraines with aura, to severe gastric problems.

I am really fed up. If people are sensitive and CANNOT use meds, what is the answer? There has to be a way of getting my blood sugar to a safe level. I know I should exercise, but I was advised against it until my levels are lower. Any advice? Thanks.

The correct diet can be a godsend-spend some time reading the forum. Lots of people on the forum have reduced their carbs and controlled weight and diabetes, some have been able to reduce medication-some require no medication-T2 only. All the answers are on the forum.

It is always possible that your body reacts to insulin, but you don't make any mention of diet. If you are not already controlling your carb then you must do this as a normal diet with diabetes and insulin may well cause weight gain. Go for something like 150gm/day max and adjust the insulin units to have a morning fasting level of around 6 mmol but have enough of course to avoid hypos. You must see the GP if you have a reaction to the insulin or need further guidance. I'm guessing you may be overweight and insulin resistant in which case you can get into a vicious circle with insulin. Carb reduction will break that circle but give it time to work.

Yep I am overweight and I am also struggling with comfort eating. I try and watch what I consume throughout the day, but if I get stressed or upset, I go for the carbs. With all the insulin I have tried, the Insuman 25 combi didn't make me swell up until I reached 16 units. I thought I was on to a winner, but it isn't bringing my blood sugar down. I just feel swollen!!!

I was hoping that weight gain would be slow, but half a stone in a week is crazy. I know I sould take the insulin, but I hate getting bigger. I am 13 stone now and hate it.

An all too common problem with drugs and glucose level control. I recently was becoming very disappointed with my efforts to reduce my blood glucose level with diet and exercise. Fortunately for me I am not on medication.
I have just found a good book and diet plan based on low glycaemic loading AND IT WORKS.
Google DIABETES DEFEATED AGORA HEALTH LTD and find the facts for yourself. I am coming to the end of my second week on the diet and my blood tests at 5.7 mml now and I've lost about 3lbs!! Brilliant.
Good luck with it and hope it can work for you.

Nothing better than accepting "moderation for life' - with a few big treats occasionally... Far better than wasting money on special diets thT cost money.

Once you have diabetes. It is coming to terms with the fact that this is a lifestyle change and NOT a diet!!!

Hi, Sorry to read of your problems but I do believe I can help. I've been diagnosed T2 for 15 years now and have been through the stage that you have described.
The measures that I have taken to reduce sugar levels ( apart from Metformin and Lantus -which by themselves were largely ineffective ) were as follows:
a) Absolutely NO chocolate or any comfort food containing sugar eg. biscuits, cake.
b) Absolutely NO potatoes.
c) Plenty of GREEN vegetables.
d) Moderate exercise to begin with eg. housework, walking - here it helps if you have a dog! After noticing a reduction in
sugar levels I was able to increase the amount of excercise but here I found it IMPORTANT to monitor MY sugar level closely in order to check that it dIdn't go too low ( for me it's below 4 ). I did not reach this sort of sugar level UNTIL I had been sticking to the above regime for some weeks.
e) I made sure that daily meals were taken at regular times and IMPORTANTLY I always checked my sugar level IMMEDIATELY BEFORE each meal.

To begin with I did find the above regime a chore but it was surprising just how quickly I became used to it - the health benefit I gained was enormous.
if you do decide to follow the above regime you may find that the keeping of sugar level records using available software may be of help.
