NovoMix 30 vs NovoRapid

Hello - this is the first time I have used this forum and I am not too sure of the insulin that my fiance uses but he injects morning (48mls) and evening (22mls) with a pen, I thinks it is NovoMix. My brother however injects before each meal and feels this way he has more control and isn't always having to eat to keep up with the insulin. My brother is quite slim and VERY strict with his diet but my fiance loves his food and whilst he wants and needs to loose weight he is not too good at sticking to a healthy diet - in my opinion he allows his BS to fall too low by not eating at regular intervalls and then wants chocolate/ice cream and all the things that put weight on. Because of this, would he be better on my brother's regime (is it Novo Rapid) - and in that case he would HAVE to understand the carb content of everything he was eating to know how much to inject?
Thank you

Susan,

Your brother is on MDI (multiple daily injections) which gives a greater flexibility to when and what you eat compared to the twice daily regime your fiance is on. I started on twice daily jabs but moved over to MDI around 15 years ago, to me its the best decision I made and my control has greatly improved over the years since this time, if your fiance is interested in changing then I suggest he speaks with his diabetes care team.

Thank you for your reply Nigel - I've only just seen it as I'm not used to using this site.

I will take your advice but will my fiance have to really count and understand his carbs better to be able to go on the different regime? He's not too good at being strict with himself and I wonder if he wil just inject and eat what he feels like!!! He's a big kid!! :-)

Hi Susannah,

It''s extremely important that your fiance knows the carb value of his food in order to give the correct amount of insulin to match it, without this knowledge then good diabetes control is unachievable. Should he decide to switch to MDI and once he has adapted to this new regime he's diabetes nurse could refer him for a carb counting course such as DAFNE (Dose Adjustment for Normal Eating) which will teach him how to calculate the carb value of food and inject his insulin accordingly.

Let us know how he gets on! :)
